Lightbulb Marty Stuart, What a Show!!

I just got home from the show at a small concert hall in Clearwater, Florida. He and his band, The Fabulous Superlatives, exceded expectations, and I knew what to expect!

The band has been with him for years, and all are great, but Kenny Vaughn is one hot guitar player. Check out anything of his on youtube.

They played a lot of country rock, some surf music, a gospel number with good harmonies, western swing, a Woody Guthrie song, country standards, all really well done. They did use a couple of Martin dreadnoughts and Marty's mandolin, but there wasn't a lot of acoustic content.

He's on tour all over the country through August. It's worth the trip and the money to go see him. Tickets were $36 + service charge here. Show was sold out.

I’d like to see him again. First and only time was 1992 when he and Travis Tritt were on their “No Hats” tour. They played til way on down in the morning in Murfreesboro.

Love Marty. Great player of course but his whole vibe and energy. Also his sense of country music history, the Clarence White connection with the tele, etc. He played the Opry when he was like 15. His commentary in the Ken Burns documentary is great. Kenny Vaughn too- his guitarist from the beginning over 20 years ago. I only became aware of Kenny about a year ago, and realized he was the guitarist I saw with Lucinda Williams in the 90's. I clearly remember him from then- what he looked like, even his gear. He was so cool in the sideman role. He is also a good story teller, lots of stories and very candid takes on some musicians. There is a series of interviews on the Otis Gibbs' youtube channel.

Such a talented ensemble. The bass player, Chris Scruggs, is Earl's grandson.

I watch The Marty Stuart Show every Saturday night at 8 PM Eastern over to RFD-TV. Marty is a great player and performer and Kenny Vaughn ain't too shabby on the Tele!

So underrated. He should be a giant mega superstar. I mean, I guess he's doing okay, but still.

Have a good story for the Marty fans...

Watson Festival '91 (now Merlefest) - Marty and Sam Bush were supposed to do a mando concert/workshop under one of the tents behind the main stage.

The days leading up to the show it had rained a LOT and the whole area was muddy - well, it was raining pretty heavily but probably 200 people walked out to go to the tent.

It was probably 15-20 minutes after the start time and neither of them had showed up. Then, a fancy conversion van comes snaking it's way to the edge of the tent, and out stumbles Marty...lets just say it was apparent he had been "enjoying" himself already that morning. He gets out and asks the crowd what he's supposed to be doing, and upon the response asks for someone in the van to bring his "mandolino".

We are all sitting on bales of hay (including Marty) and after a few minutes, no Sam, so Marty asks if there are any pickers in the audience, and a guy in the back is volunteered by his friend. Marty tells his buddy to bring out his geetar and the guy comes up, visibly frightened to be thrust into this situation.

For about the first minute he was struggling, but once they got going the guy just settled in and they played great for about a half hour - all the bluegrass standards. Sam never showed and at one point, Marty made the comment that he was "Late as Usual" (the title of one of Sam's records)

I took this pic during the show. It was a lot of fun.

Marty is a true American treasure and his band of all-star players are exceptional musicians.

Sure wish some network would start producing new shows with him!
Why not a Hee-Haw remake with Marty and Vince Gill replacing Roy and Buck??

I'm sure they could fit Leroy Troy in there somewhere too
