Default And then she discovered...

Backing tracks! Free ones, on the internet.

OMG, this is so much incredible new stuff for me. I might have to take a nap this afternoon.

I'm coming for you, Lynyrd Skynyrd! Right after my nap on the sofa.

Janine, you crack me up!!! It's a lot of fun, seeing you grow and grow behind all this guitar stuff...

Ms. Shred, indeed! Just wait until you figure out that pentatonics are just the beginning...

Keep having fun and sharing it with us!

I most certainly will. I'm glad you find it amusing. Imagine if Gilda Radner were learning the guitar, that would be me.

I remember when I tried to learn guitar at 18, my teacher showed me how to play a scale and told me to practice it every day, but he never told me WHY or WHAT I could do with that knowledge. I thought scales were just warm up exercises, which I happily skipped b/c they were so BORING, so I could try to figure out how to play "Don't Fear The Reaper" in cowboy chords from listening to the record. It didn't really work.

I thought it was it me. I must've been born without any music genes even though I have always loved music all my life. It makes me want to revamp music pedagogy. It's really sad the way they used to teach. Maybe even the way they still teach? Especially girls and guitar.

We've come a long way, baby, but we still gots a long ways to go.

If seeing female electric guitarists is inspiring for you, check these two out:

Gretchen Menn
Tory Slusher

Tory especially is super talented and virtuoso.

All good guitarists are inspiring, but yes, it's very nice to see other women rocking out, I mean SHREDDING! I have always loved Bonnie Raitt. She's an amazing musician.

Angela Petrilli is also really good, and her lesson videos are great! She's a good player and a good teacher.

You're only seconds away from asking how to download YouTube audio in .mp3 format so you can put tracks into The Amazing Slowdowner.

A few more you can add to the list, in several different genres:

Orianthi
Debbie Davies
Mary Osborne
Anita Cochran
Emily Remler
Jennifer Batten

- and not to forget the great-grandmother of them all, Mary Ford trading licks with then-husband Les Paul in this rare 1952 live-TV appearance:

Obviously, in addition to an electric guitar and an amp, I'll need to get myself a strapless formal dress. What an adorable video. Thank you for sharing it.

Janine, when you say “shred” guitar is that your way of saying playing lead? Like all lead guitarists are shredders?

Or are you talking about guys like Satriani, Malmsteen. Bennencourt, Vai, Johnson? You know, the godfathers of shred?

Yes. Playing lead. Also being able to artfully mix and alternate between solos and rhythm, so when you play alone it still sounds like a "complete" song.

Does that make sense? Although my "godparents" are more like Clapton, Hendrix, Jimi Page, etc.
