Art & Lutherie Legacy Havana Brown Q-Discrete
Has anyone played/looked at/ owned this model?
Is it spruce or cedar top? What are your impressions? Thanks

I never had the chance to play one. The top is solid spruce per their website.

Hey Sal, yes I've played one and it was a very nice sounding guitar. One thing i liked about it vs their sister Seagull guitars, was the 1.72 nut width. Not as wide as the Seagull 1.8" nut. Very cool J160 vibe with the controls on the top of the guitar.
It was at this store in NJ https://www.jbkline.com/music-store. They had a bunch of A&L guitars.

One of our locals carries Godin family guitars. I’ve played several Simon and Patricks, Art / Lutherie (cool name, by the way), and Seagulls. The Seagulls all have necks too wide for my preference, but I really like all the A/L and S/Ps I’ve played. They often have rosette designs that don’t appeal to me, but that’s just my taste (or lack of). They are all priced really well too.

I owned both the six and 12 string models of this guitar for about two years. I loved a number of things about them, including quality of construction, playability, neck profile, appearance, and their rock-like stability, irrespective of humidity. I didn't bond well with the 6 string simply because of its tone. Although it was balanced and sweet-sounding, I found it kind of quiet, with just not enough complexity to grab me. I actually found that the 12 string had fantastic tone, and responded well to loud playing, even in altered tunings. The pickup system is so-so, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. I ended up selling the 6 string because of the tone issue, and the 12 string because I didn't play it much.

Thank you all… I guess I’m not expecting it to sound like a D-18, but for 5 beans it might be worth a test drive. Joe… I never heard of that store; gotst to go there!

Cool store in Lambertville Sal. Upstairs from a coffee house, there's lots of cool, funky off the wall stuff there. I love it. Great pub down the street, make a day of it.

Roger at Brickhouse Guitars has some great demos on his website. He’s a good picker too.

For what it’s worth, the current iteration of this guitar has a cedar top. I’ll confirm next week when I get mine.

I think it depends on the finish - bourbon burst and faded black finishes are on cedar top while everything else is on spruce.

Godin do seem to move around the mix of spruce or cedar tops on various models each year. I expect that this is because of where the woods are sourced. They have a licence to remove fallen old growth trees so I expect that each year the mix of stock that they have laid down varies. It could be at present that they have more cedar coming to the end of its seasoning in their drying rooms than spruce. Next year it may be more spruce than cedar etc.
The Q-discrete models have the knobs mounted on the top of the guitar. So it would make engineering sense to have those in spruce rather than cedar. Therefore, the QIT models would be the ones to switch to cedar if there happened to be more of that available. I have a bourbon burst Legacy with a spruce top from a few year's ago. I expect that, at the time, they had more spruce available than cedar. Whatever, I do really rate the Legacy I have. It has great character and a unique voicing - plus it puts up with the hard life that I give it!

My six string had a cedar top. My 12 string was spruce. Maybe this contributed to the difference in volume between the two guitars.
