Default FS: Tony Karol - Sitka/Padauk Custom Jumbo - Price Drop!

*** SOLD - thanks everyone ***

New video added 03-15 and price drop!

New Pictures added 03-14

What could be a better New Years resolution: add a big, bold sound to your sonic arsenal this year? Check out this magnificent Tony Karol Jumbo and you'll understand why people like Bruce Cockburn, Tommy Emmanuel, and Stephen Bennett play his instruments. Tony's workmanship is flawless. I hate to let this one go.

It is in 'as new condition' - there are no issues. Here's a video of me playing a fingerstyle piece on this instrument. I have a pretty light touch, but this one is so responsive. Of course it will take whatever you can dish out up to aggressive strumming. Great for open tunings, too. I play it all the way down to open C. The bevel makes for comfy playing. I am the original owner, purchased from the Twelfth Fret in Toronto based on the assessment of co-owner and master luthier David Wren. I came to implicitly trust his assessment of instruments and he did not disappoint with this one. Here's what he had to say

What an absolute POWERHOUSE of a guitar! Not being a huge fan of " Jumbo " body guitars in general, I was completely knocked out when I sat down and played this one by Anthony Karol. It really is one of the best sounding Jumbos I have ever played! This Karol Traditional Jumbo has a MASSIVE overall presence, but is every bit as articulate and well balanced as we have come to expect from this exceptional luthier! Yes, you heard me, "balanced" and "Jumbo" in the same sentence!!!

Valentines day is coming ... this would make a great gift for someone out there

In response to a couple of requests, I have recorded some dry clips of this one. My youtube performance video obviously has some processing (reverb). This audio demo has no effects and no EQ - recorded with a Shure KSM44 about 24" away ... straight to disk. Probably not the best mic to use, but I did this quick and dirty last night just to capture the "raw sound". Some strumming and picking using a flat pick ... I think this nicely captures the character and tonality of this instrument. Awesome clarity and note separation from top to bottom IMHO. I had to really hold back so as not to overwhelm the mic. The last two pieces are fingerstyle - bare fingers. Everything is standard tuning, at pitch, no capo.

Here is the audio link

Thanks for looking (and listening).

I own a Karol harp guitar and I can attest that Tony Karol's guitars are second to none. I'm sure anyone would be happy with this guitar.

I have a friend who plays very well and is a nut for sound. He had a Goodall, has a Santa Cruz OM/PW and a Karol that he calls concert size, somewhat like a deep bodied OM to me. I play it from time to time and it is a VERY nice sounding guitar that is easy to play. it is spruce and some kind of rosewood. It has matured over the last several years...an articulate instrument that is rewarding to play...I played it maybe 2 weeks ago.

Met Tony at Woodstock back in October. His harp guitar was a monster and, despite being a Leafs fan, was quite a good guy

Default FS: Anthony Karol Custom Traditional Jumbo - Beautiful Redhead

I second the +1 for coopman as well

And this Karol guitar is The Stuff. I've listened to your sound clip quite a few times, and I really enjoy your playing.

Thanks for the nice comments Eclectichick!

Bump - looking for some love for this Jumbo. Surprised it's still available, but there are a few people 'on-the-fence'. Out of curiousity I browsed 'jumbos' on Dreamguitars and this one is priced significantly less than most of thier offerings, although I'd venture that it would hold up well against any of them. It is a gem. The nice thing is that it doesn't feel Jumbo thanks to the Laskin armrest. It's the best of both worlds: a lot of sound for minimal effort without that bloated feeling

Too bad I couldn't get Al Petteway to stop by and record a little demo ...

I took some new indoor shots tonight to get some better detail. As good as new .... even better if you consider how much it has opened up.

I was in touch with Tony recently. The upgrades on this one bring it up to almost $6,000 and you'd have to wait a year. This one is special because Tony does not ship the Brazilian trim options any more (to the states). I think the Brazilian bridge adds a lot of 'zing' to this one. Get it while you can.

Beautiful Brazilian Rosewood rosette and fretboard detailing:

Nice silking:

Bookmatched Brazilian headstock:

Incredible attention to detail - check out his miter joints:

Beautiful Paduak - a little overexposed. Not quite this bright, but close. Sorry about the reflections, but hard to capture:

Great action - approx 6.5/64ths or .105 low E at the 12fret. It is well set up and the neck is true.

One more from the players perspective:

I recorded some new music to get in the spirit for St Patrick's day:

Let's see if we can find this one a new home.

After the "Cannon and Butter thread" I rushed over here to make sure I had not used the negatively perceived phrase "plays like butter". Phew ... I had only said "plays like a dream" ... but in the interest of clarity changed it to: "It is well set up and the neck is true." Gee - that might not be all that helpful either ... please see the picture and the specs and judge for yourself. I'm glad to take more pictures or measure anything else.

It must be a regional/cultural thing ... I've used the term, but rarely ... having played many instruments that did not play like butter: twisted necks, uneven frets, worn fingerboard, frets with grooves, quarter inch high action, etc. This instrument is not one of those, in any regard.

Interested now?

Bump ...
