you really have to feel the neck size differences. '58 reissue necks are generally pretty big. You can find a '58 with flame if you look hard enough. But if you've got the go ahead from the wife I would go for the '59 or '60 reissue for their slightly smaller neck shape, and find one with a flame top you like.

The large neck thing doesn’t bother me as much now as it did years ago. Oddly, a buddy had a 1957 Black Beauty that I played a lot back in the 70s. I have no memory of that guitar having a big neck. I do remember that it was heavy and that it played great, but that is all I can remember about that guitar. I can’t even remember if the PAFs sounded that much better than anything else. At the time we didn’t know those were supposed to be the holy grail of tone.

Well I went with a flame top…’59 Les Paul Reissue VOS. Should have it in a few days.
I figured I couldn’t go wrong with this classic (fingers crossed).
Southern Fade burst and non aged.

Congrats, I've been playing Historic Les Pauls for about as long as they've been available, and I think think that in the last few years they've gotten more and more consistently good. Odds are on your side that yours is going to be a good one! I love the Southern Fade. I currently own three Historics, a '54, '57, and '60, and they are all great. The '60 reissue is the best rock guitar and I like the neck shape the best, the '57 is the most versatile, and the '54, with it's P90s, is the most raw sounding and I like it most for blues and slide guitar.

Guitar arrived yesterday and spent a couple of hours with it. Nothing I can tell so far that could be improved on it.
Perfect fit and finish, love the ‘59 neck, pickups and not an over the top flame.
Southern fade looks fantastic in person ( would have thought it was a bourbon burst).
Couldn’t be happier with this heirloom instrument.

How do you like the Custombucker pups?

I have 3 Historics or what used to be called Historics. I love the Custom Shop reissues. I have found them to be just better overall guitars than the Gibson USA models and I have a few of those as well. They are more resonant, have better finishes, and better pups and wiring. I know you pay a premium, but they sure are nice.

Congrats on your new R9.

I really like the pickups in this guitar. I don’t have anything to compare it to. I went with a good friend’s advice (he loves the guitars but is all about Tom Anderson now).
I play it through a Swart STR/Tremolo and I think it sounds heavenly.
Very happy guitar hack here.
