I want to see the figure of the wood.

I don't like dark or opaque bursts.
I really dislike bursts with yellow in them.

Shade or edgebursts sure. I rather like Martin's Amberburst. I definitely like it better than their orange or yellow "toners".

The only guitar I own with any kind of burst is my Alvarez Baritone. Shade/edge burst. On that one I think it classes it up a bit. Then again, it was a $300 guitar.

The only guitars that need bursts are Gibson Smecks and anything built by Kevin Kopp. Other than those, I'd be happy to have a natural top.

I think a nicely done tobacco burst is a thing of beauty.
Iv seen some bad attempts as well. But if its done well
I prefer it to natural. The pic in post 50 of the
taylor 900 series, Just beautifully done. imho.
To me the guitar has to looked stained not painted.

Those are artfully done. I am not a fan of blue on guitars but it is still artfully done and the way the top two are done helps to bring out the grain of the wood. I also like that it is not too dark but just right IMHO.

Perhaps it’s my love of archtop guitars, but I love a nice sunburst. Here is one of my flat tops:

The burst that tempts me the most--that won't probably tempt a lot here:

Yeah, I love a good burst, but that means not covering up a nice AAA spruce top with great silking!

I was wondering when someone would bring up that H&D "Tequila Sunrise" horizontal burst. I vaguely recall seeing a Collings with a similar burst, maybe from a NAMM show? It's quite well done for what it is, but not my thing. That Buscarino burst is pretty yummy while remaining subtle.

Some years ago I was opening for the great Jack Williams.

The first time we met was in a hall as he was finishing his sound check, and his Martin D35 lying an some seats on the front row.

I played a D35 from '75 until about '96, and then later I bought a shaded top version which looked great but didn't have the sound.

As I walked into the hall, I glanced at his guitar and said "Hi Jqck, I see you have a shaded top D35!"

He gave me a puzzled look ... I looked closer to his d35 and realised that it wasn't a shaded top, it was just ... really dirty :

AFAIK , it still is :

Do I like bursts?

When appropriate, Yes.
