Default Warren Haynes Wild Horses Questions

Hey folks, I found a really good cover of Wild Horses by Warren Haynes and I have a couple of questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- He appears to be palming his pick (when playing fingerstyle) and I am not sure how to do this. I am looking for some online resources to learn this technique. Any recommendations?
- What tuning is he using?

Thanks!

He's in standard tuning.

The pick palming technique is fairly simple. Place the pick into your "Heart Line" (The line that goes from the below your pinky and curves up to your middle finger) Then as long as you don't straighten your pinky and ring fingers the pick will stay there.

Sounds to me like he's tuned down a step.

I had a few minutes at lunch today to give it a better listen and he's actually tuned up about a half step. If you hit your G note while he's playing the G chord and stretch it up a bit you can match what he's playing.

That's what I get for giving my opinion without due process.

Yes, you are right. He is tuned up almost a half step but not all the way. That threw me off. He probably just picked up the guitar and tuned it by ear using one of the strings as a reference. Makes sense now.

Thanks for the help!

Then out of 22,252 views, you should be the first person to give it a thumbs down. Honestly, I didn’t think much of it the first time I heard it, but I listened again and it grew on me.

Very much agree. And I am pretty sure Keith's part is played in open G.
Just great.
