Default Fret and Soundhole cracks - Taylor NS62ce

Hi folks,

This is a new-to-me 2003 Taylor NS62ce.

I found this on my inspection. As I rub my finger over it, I can feel the surface is uneven. On the top of the neck, there also seems to be a crack that runs adjacent to it.

What are your thoughts? None of this is normal, right? I'm assuming they're all humidity-related cracks.

Unfortunately, the seller told me there were no issues at all with the guitar.

Thanks, I appreciate your time and help.

This is also the top, you can see the it is running along side neck and covers the entire distance of this area.

None here. Google photo's are very problematic posting on forums. Just make a link to share your photo's or use another service like Imgur.

Nope, not normal and probably humidity related. Best thing to do is take it too a good local guitar tech. IMHO it's not DIY type repairs and it's best you get if fixed ASAP before it gets worse.

For informational purposes here's how Frank Ford does it: http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/Luth...topcrack1.html

It's a shear failure of the top, with displacement, caused by neck/fretboard movement.

This is structural, not cosmetic. It's not humidity related.

Return the guitar.

Thanks all for your quick input.

The guitar was purchased through Reverb with an option to return if the item within 7 days if it is "not as described" (which fits in this case). I am heavily considering this option, as I do not want a headache out of this, even though the guitar itself is beautiful and has great tone. I don't have much of a budget for repairs, as none was anticipated. I've informed the seller of my findings, but have yet to discuss with a luthier. Our state is currently shelter-in-place.

What would you do?

+1
Looks like the neck has flexed due to being dropped or squashed in some way.
It could be more damages that are not visible, is my thinking.

Peace

Thank you all for taking the time to respond.

I was able to reach out to Reverb staff in a timely manner and request a full refund, which the seller approved. I'm sad to let this beautiful guitar go, I was proud to have purchased it knowing I had a piece of history.

Cheers.

100% correct. I recently checked out a Larrivee parlor at a local shop that the owner was going to give me a "special deal" on, even though it was in "mint" condition. When I asked him if he was aware of the structural top crack along the fret board he said he was aware of it but he wasn't going mention it because it wasn't a problem. Yeah, right.

I looked there specifically because I noticed the saddle was lower than what it should have been, indicating that there was a structural failure. It didn't take much investigation to ascertain why the string height had increased to the point that the saddle needed to be substantially reduced in height to make it playable.

The failure along the grain of the top at the edge of the fret board is always indicative of a deeper problem.
