Default Music notation software

My daughter is looking for software that will allow her to play piano and turn it into sheet music. It would also be nice if it could create tablature from guitar as well. Any ideas?

Check out Musescore https://musescore.org I use it every day and really like it a lot. And it's free.

I use MuseScore as well. It does have the ability to generate notation automatically while a piece is being played, if that's what you're after: MuseScore Real-Time Input but it is limited to one "voice", or monophonic line, at one time. Even then, you'll need to know how to notate yourself in case there are transcription errors. You can't just play something and voila, a score appears.

I use Sibelius. It's probably more than I need but it makes nice charts. I stuck with it just because I used it on a project a while back. My guess that a lot on the notation softwares will have similar features. It does have templates for just about any stringed instrument. Sibelius First is free for use/trial, there are some limitations.

I've been using Sibelius since the early 2000s. I also have MuseScore & continually try to like it, but it falls short of Sibelius's feature set for professional notation. it's more than adequate for simple leadsheets, though.

Sibelius will notate a full piano performance & can will convert it to tab. I have done that. Just be warned, Avid owns Sibelius and they are stingy as all get out. Check the feature set of all versions to make sure the version you are considering supports that feature.

Cool Avid

+1 to what DupleMeter said. I have been using Sibelius for a long time and like it. I think Avid charges too much for it though.

I don’t play piano but recently started using Dorico on my iPad for guitar notation. After years of using Guitar Pro the user interface took a while to get used to but Dorico has some real advantages. And it has both keyboard and fretboard input interfaces. I only played with the on screen keyboard but the instructional video said you can attach a physical keyboard.

The OP should be aware that programs of this type require very accurate playing to produce the desired results. If you're not extremely accurate in your playing, you're going to spend hours editing what the program initially delivers.
