Callouses
Well it's been a month since I began guitar and the callouses on the fingertips are forming nicely, I can at least practice a reasonable length of time now.
A question, Do you do anything to maintain the callouses? because I've noticed there are some dried flaky, rough areas forming. Do you smooth them out a little perhaps with sandpaper? Thanks! |

Emery boards - the black ones which are course and more course on opposite sides. I smooth mine all the time... |

Ha I used to bite mine when the edge was lifting that never happens now I guess they go deeper and are permanently there now. It does allow you to practice longer which is great.

Thank you all for the answers. It's amazing how quickly the body responds to forming thicker skin, I think about two weeks into practicing, the fingertips already were beginning to get pretty thick and insensitive.

Wow - I've never heard that before Larry. I have one of those black ones like you mentioned and I just did my nails 15 minutes ago. Is the purpose simply to remove some of the dead skin?

I don't do a thing unless they start to snag. Then I sand or cut off the offending part.

I use Burt's Bee Balm every night at bedtime. It keeps the fingertips soft. I still have the callouses, but they rarely peel off anymore. Also prevents bothersome cracking.

Yup, just smooth the dead stuff away and get rid of some of the 'groove'. If you play a lot/regularly, you don't have to worry about taking off too much. If I don't smooth mine at least once a week, it starts to get ragged and will snag strings, buzz, and squeak worse. |

After 30 years+ of playing regularly, the ends of my fingers are like the heels of my feet, don't even have to concern myself with that extra layer any more.

after a few years, mines have softened up a bit, and kind of settled into a "pin cushon" kind of state; kind of like little pads. they arent hard, but strings dont bother them either.
