Natural? Artificial? None at all? The Compression Issue
While looking at and playing my guitars, I realized how much I've loved naturally compressed sounding guitars. Guitars with mahogany tops and other guitars which have been classified as sounding compressed unplugged have been, for a long time, part of my repertoire, probably because my style of play. And I'm sure others don't like that tone and, if they want to compress, they'd use a compressor and others wouldn't even bother.
What do you prefer?

I love the natural compression my J-45 has when I dig into it. It's the acoustic version of an overdriven Marshall stack. Great tone!

I prefer dynamic range to compression.

3 out of my 5 wood guitars are hardwood tops. So, Yes, I love the compressed tone of hardwood tops.

I like variety. Three of my guitars have hard wood tops, (one Mahogany and two Koa). I find them to be rich and forgiving. The other three have spruce, (one Sitka VTS, one untreated Sitka and one is a 103 year old Adirondack). I love them all, but for reasons that I can’t explain, I am more drawn to the hard tops.

Acoustic compression and electronic compression are two different things. A guitar compresses when it runs out of headroom. It can be thought of as good or bad depending on subjective taste. Nothing changes on the quiet side of the dynamic range. Electronic compression squeezes both ends of the spectrum making the quiet louder and the loud quieter, restricting dynamic range. Great for playing through Zoom or in some recording and live settings.
Compression has quashed most commercial recordings, squeezing the life out of them. I generally like headroom, but slamming a rhythm on my 00 15 can be very effective, so the answer is have both.

I like a very dynamic guitar.
But I also like adding compression in the mix -just a few db's at 2:1 or less from Fabfilter's Pro C 2 |
