Default John Leventhal

I'm on a bit of a J.L. kick these days. I just click with his playing style and collaborations; his surgeon-like precision and sharp-shooter tightness. And, he is not bothered in the least with plugging his Martin in and using effects. I like that. Anyway, here are a few clips with his wife (Rosanne Cash), Shawn Colvin and Sarah Jarosz followed by an in depth interview. Check these out of you are not familiar with John Leventhal. You might be impressed.

I stumbled onto John Leventhal through Sarah Jarosz. Check out his Tele playing in this Sarah Jarosz video covering Childish Things by James McMurtry. His playing is spot on throughout and the solo he plays is killer. It tells a whole story on its own.

The live show they performed for PBS's "The Kate" is well worth watching. Just the two of them in a close up and personal setting, performing many of Rosanne's best works.

Saw them live like that, a few years ago, in a small venue….great show!

Hi Daniel,
I've been a fan of John Leventhal since Sonny Came Home.

My wife and I saw him and Roseanne Cash perform their entire album The River And The Thread at Carnegie Hall.

His overall sense of musicality glows no matter what he's playing or putting together. He definitely comes from the Less Is More School.

Best,
Howard Emerson

No doubt I’ve heard his playing before. Not a household name but I’m glad I know it now
Very tasty playing

Thanks for sharing

One of the best compliments I ever got was when I was helping Marc Cohn (Walking In Memphis) with a possible guitar purchase. Marc, being a lefty, meant I had to demonstrate all the vintage guitars.

After a little bit he said that my playing reminded him of his producer. I said “Who’s that?”

“John Leventhal” he said.

Whew….made my day.

I’ve listened and played along with this tune so much lately I think my wife is about to intervene.

That’d do it nicely for sure. (And your playing is indeed top notch, sir!)

One of the best shows I've ever seen was Rosanne Cash and JL at the Folly Theater in Kansas City several years ago.

Just the two of them for 2.5 hours. I was completely mesmerized for the whole time.

Here's a good example of Leventhal's wide rnage as a terrific guitar player/multi-instrumentalist/composer/producer. From Shawn Colvin's "A few small repairs" - the Grammy winner produced by Leventhal. In this tune of his own composition he plays all guitar parts including the steel pedal and slides and he also plays the organ. To me, THAT is proper guitar pickin'. ymmv

Thanks for sharing-he is certainly worthy of additional recognition! I know of him through his wife’s videos, but I failed to recognize his talent. (Easy to do when sharing the frame with someone named Cash!). Will definitely check out more of his work.

It doesnt hurt to have top shelf guitars and audio engineering, either. They dont skimp on quality or talent!
