Default phaser problems

My friend has an old stomp phaser that we were trying out but we cant find the power supply connection or a battery compartment. When we plug it into the guitar and amp it sounds just like it did without it. Then if you hit the stomp button it mutes the guitar completely. It has screws to open the whole thing, would that be were the batteries go? Is it broke?

Some older units didn't have a battery compartment. If it is an Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, for example, you have to pull the four screws and remove the top of the box. Ross units and MXRs required removing the bottom. With no battery power, units like that would behave exactly like you are describing.
