I'll post as well. I think the back looks awesome, I too am becoming a real fan of the aesthetics of the Paduak, great color and figure. I read somewhere that it can lose some of its color if not handled correctly. I may be wrong on that though, I am wrong on a lot of stuff.

I don't think it matters how you handle it. The color fades with time to more of a brick red. Not sure if it's UV or oxidization..

Tom, I read the something similar but hasn't happened with Ed's at this point. I read where the red color can bleed into other/lighter adjacent woods. Haven't seen it though.

In the "For what it is worth category", this is what I had found earlier. It came from a website called the wood data base....

"Comments: Padauk has a very unique reddish orange coloration, and the wood is sometimes referred to by the name Vermillion. Unfortunately, this dramatic color is inevitably darkened to a deep reddish brown color. (See the article Preventing Color Changes in Exotic Woods for more information.) UV-inhibiting finishes may prolong, but not prevent the gradual color-shift of this brightly colored wood."

This is probably the same as the brick red mentioned above...

At least I proved I can read, if nothing else.

thanks TomB. other recent reads suggest a sanding just before stain or lacquer brightens things up but it will still darken with age and an oil based cover muddies it big time. I think Ed will use nitro cellulose. As long as my flamed maple ages to a nice piss yellow to contrast with the brick red we'll be in line with the urban burst theme I am going for . Bleeding into another color, not so sure.

Peace

John

Haha...now that yellow can vary quite a bit depending on concentration which itself can be determined by prior consumption of various fluids...

Default Lam binding

Per ED: "The beginnings of this, incredibly time consuming, laminate binding with built in reinforced thumb beam. Tinker land !!!"

"Still plugging away at the laminate linings here. They are assembled in the frame of the guitar but not attached to it so they can be shaped on a router before they are glued to the sides."

Ed can speak to this more than I, but he's doing solid linings rather than kerfling inside. Apparently challenging and time consuming making for a more expensive and better (beefier) built guitar.

She's coming along nicely !

I'm not sure handling has anything at all to do with the color change, just like my hair.

We'll be going UV poly by Tim's and Rob's recommendations...

Is this a change from Nitrocelulose ?

Default The end result

Per Ed: These laminate Spanish cedar linings are a piece of artwork. 3 days to construct not counting the time I spent just thinking about how I was going to build them. Yup, they go inside the guitar !!! Tinker anyone ?

That was RJ actually. I had do have a good think about whether I'd done a post after too many tipples, but then I remembered he can post too. Which is good, cause I'm not quite ready for dementia...

I'm loving that back! The color contrast is quite striking. I have to ask though; how much will the red fade to brown?

Also, where does padauk fall in the tonal/rigidity spectrum? I bought some at the local Rockler store to make a xylophone for my 8 yo son and my little bandsaw had a heck of a time cutting through it. When I finally got through a particularly long cut a section fell to the concret floor below and gave a nice hearty PING! that rivaled the sound made when I was using a metal wedge to split a spruce billet.

I have a feeling that this guitar is going to have sustain for days. I am intrigued.

Ahhhh Haaa! Busted taking credit for the art of someone else ! It's a good thing that never happens in any other artistic venues (Warhol paintings for example). Not 100% sure what a "tipple" is but I suspect ethanol is involved which often lubricates the artistic hinges.

Nice job RJ! Thanks to you and Ed (Tinker Guitars).

Peace

John
