Recommendation for guitar refinisher (varnish preferred)
Hello!!
I have a guitar that really could use a refinish (it's a lowden). Does anyone do this or have a recommendation of someone who does? I would love to get it varnished. Thanks! Jordan

Maybe try finding out who does the varnish for Collings? They farm it out locly to someone in Austin.

Finisher
Jordan,
I have a Burner PS that was finished by Joe White of Sunset Guitar Finishing, and it is the most beautiful polyester sunburst finish job I have ever seen. I've heard others rave about his work. Not sure if he does varnish, but it's worth a shot. Joe used to be active on this forum, but I'm not sure if he still is.

Jordan, I do not know if you used the term "varnish" as a generic name for "finish", but an oil varnish finish is much more labour intensive than pretty much any other guitar finish, and it's not going to be cheap.
Not sure if it's worth it for your Lowden (value-wise, I am not saying the guitar doesn't deserve a new finish, or isn't good enough).

Hey, I did mean an oil varnish. But, if you don't think it's worth it, maybe I'll look in to other options.

There's no question in MY mind that it's worth it as it's all I do on my guitars, and not because I haven't done most other things at some point. Varnishes advantages are in sound, longevity, and appearance, its disadvantages are cost and relative short term fragility. It takes me 4 times as long as Nitro does!
I do not know of anyone who does Oil Varnish for others, including me. You could do it yourself, however, and all it takes is a clean dry space, a good brush, and hard work. I have instructions/method I can email if you ask for it. |
