I actually prefer closed tuners. Both my Baranik and Sheppard use Gotoh 510s and I really can't fault them - very smooth and accurate. I use a lot of alternate tunings and will often shift around three or four times in a playing session, so I appreciate being able to do it quickly and easily.
My Collings OM has Waverlys, which I think look good on that style of instrument. I wouldn't say they're any better than the 510s though - if anything, I find them a little less smooth to use. I also love wooden buttons - much more organic to feel while re-tuning, and I think they look better too.

I've noticed cheaper tuners have issues when I do open string bends behind the nut. I usually do half or whole tone bends. They will put the guitar out of tune flat. I had a set of Grovers that would do that, whats wierd is I had the same model of tuners on a different guitar and they don't go out at all.
The Waverlys don't go out either which is what I like about them.

+1 on that! Either set is fine by me... they are equally nice.

A customer of mine fell in love with some Alessi classical tuners (Hauser 3 model) and wanted them to custom build the set with steel string rollers.
Turns out that Alessi will do that--and sell them through LMI--and only charge one arm, and two legs. I'll try to get a photo up when they arrive. Mid February is the target. Steve |
