Default Osthoff OM Cedar/Ziricote Build For TAMCO

It is time to get started on another OM for Trevor at The Acoustic Music Guitar Company (TAMCO) over in the UK. This one is going to be Cedar over Ziricote. I am very excited about this combo. It will have Koa Bindings. The fretboard and headstock will also be bound along with side purflings as those are now standard feature on my guitars.

We will use some sort of burl or spalt for the rosette and it will also have wood inlays (no shell.)

I have already joined the top and back and I did not take any pictures of that process, but you can see a representive look at how I do that on page two of this build thread I did last year.

Here is the back:

Double sides are also now standard on my guitars and on this build, the outer (of course) being the ziricote and I will be using Macassar Ebony for the inside. (In the photo the pieces with the chalk lines are the ziricote pieces for the outside.)

Here is "burl" piece of claro Walnut that I might find some interesting stuff for a rosette.

I don't have any (decent) photos of the cedar top yet, but once I get going on the rosette (maybe later this week) I will post some pictures of the top.

It has been a while since I have had a chance to post on the forum, so it is good to be doing another build thread. We are very pleased to be working with Trevor again and we are very excited about getting this OM going.

John,

There is no other word for those woods, including the wood for the rosette, than "Sexy." This is going to be enjoyable to watch come together!

Thanks,
Mike

I look forward to following this build, John. It's going to be spectacular, I know. But then I'm just a wee bit partial to zircote, both tonally and visually.

The word "arty" came to mind when I saw the back wood. Fabulous pattern.

John, I am intrigued by the double sides. What is the rationale? I am sure we will see the process and I am sure it is pure genius!

Hi Eric,

A lot of guys have been doing double sides before I joined in and I think most of the were influence by Ervin Somogyi. Ervin goes into a bunch of reasons for it, and I won't paraphrase him here but to say that I found the composite of the double sides do make a stiffer rim (which I believe) to be a good thing. Also it makes sense that the sides are less prone to cracks. One other thing, is that I no longer use the side support strips.

Hope all is going well with you Eric. Talk soon my man.

That picture of the burl looks like a satellite photo of the Middle East!

I'm really looking forward to seeing and playing this one - that ziricote looks great.

I played John's rosewood OOO last time I was at TAMCO, and thought it was one of the best instruments in the shop.

I've been finishing up a couple of other projects but I got a few things going on this one this week. I had planned on working on the rosette, but I got "sidetracked." (Started working with the sides instead)

First up was selecting and cutting the binding material

I bend the sides, both inside and outside, the bindings and purfling all together. It all gets wrapped in kraft paper (which is the biggest help with rosewoods) Here the side parts (in the kraft paper) are ready to come out of the bender.

In the next photo the sides are unwrapped,

Here is another shot of the side. The binding a purfling went along for the ride.

The next step is to get the inner and outer sides ready for laminating. In this shot, the sides are bonded together and left in the side forms over night.

More to come

John, please excuse my ignorance, but how does the kraft paper help?

Can't wait to see this one's back, and the rosette!

Hi John,
I really like your designs; this should be another great looker. Hope to play one someday.

I'll be very interested to see this guitar. I was in TAMCO today and played the mahogany/spruce Osthoff OM that Trevor has in stock. It's a really good guitar and I greatly enjoyed playing it.

I haven't been much of a fan of cedar tops over the years, but I played a great Petros in ziricote and cedar some time ago and loved it, so I'm looking forward to seeing - and hopefully playing - this OM.

It was that very Petros that inspired me to ask John for the same combination.
