I loved my Big Baby before I traded it toward my 214.

+1 for the BBT but I don't have all that much to compare to.

Worth checking out.
I started with an Alvarez and one of the biggest selling points for me was the wider 1 3/4” nut which gives your fingers just a little more space. For me that was a great feature.
It came down to Yamaha and Alvarez both great guitars. While most higher priced Yamaha’s have the 1 3/4” nut their starter priced guitars have the narrower 1 11/16” nut. While that’s a small difference to many it’s very noticeable and most guitar manufacturers are now producing guitars with the wider nut but it is a personal choice.
Good luck!

This is a really good point, I wasn’t aware of this.

Any 1 3/4” nut guitar models that you can recommend ?

Yamaha or Alvarez?

Of the choices listed, I would rate Yamaha at the top, followed by the Big Baby.

Is the action the only issue you have with the FX335? If so I'd recommend taking that to a guitar shop for a setup rather than getting a new guitar right now. Depending on where you are located that would probably be around $50-$80.

If you are set on getting something new, the Yamaha 800 series are great guitars, you'd likely be happy with any of the models, tho they might still need a setup to lower the action a bit (I'm not sure how they come out of the box).

+1 on looking at (and maybe pricing in) a setup. The saddle and the nut can both be involved in the process and while it is not a complicated job, it can also require some, shall I say, finesse. A local tech does a simple setup for $35 (last time I checked, now a few years back). I have heard of double that being still in line, and I consider it money well spent.

I have been doing a research and I narrowed it down to a few choices based on what I found on the net:

Fender GC140SCE
Taylor Big Baby
Taylor 110e (a little pricey)
Yamaha FSX800C
Martin X Series DXMAE

I would like mainly the Taylor 110e but it is a little over my budget, so I am inclined to the Big Baby.

I want a guitar that is well made, sounds good and it has a decent action.

I know that maybe I am asking for too much on an entry level guitar, but I want something that will be easy to play and will encourage me to continue playing, I tried a cheaper Yamaha FX335 version and the action was very high and my fingers were in pain.

Any other good choices under $400 (used ones) ?, Seagull? anything else?

Thanks in advance!!!
My philosophy is that EVERY guitar, specially if you buy it new, will need a setup; so high action on a guitar should not be a deal breaker when they can be set up to be playable with no pain or discomfort.

Under $400 you may check Epiphone or Yamaha, used or new.

I have the Yamaha FSX800C. It is a very good guitar. There is plenty of room to grow with it.

I also have a Taylor GS Mini which I bought instead of a Baby Taylor when I was pretty much in the same circumstances as the OP. Hindsight, I'm glad I bought the Mini instead of the Baby Taylor, but I like the Yamaha better.

Are you thinking more about the 1 3/4"-inch models then? If so I don't know much about Yamahas with that width. I'd recommend just about any Alvarez or a Seagull, which comes in two "flavors" ... a standard 1.8 inches and a "slim" 1.72 inches. Or a Martin, but not the all-HPL model you listed. I bought my X1-DE recently on sale for about $360 and it has the wider nut width.

Yes, I would much prefer a thinner nut width but I'd also prefer to be many years younger.

Also have you thought about how you will amplify your guitar? That opens up the question about a standard guitar amp or one made for acoustics or through a P.A. system or through a home system, etc.

Guild D-240E, under $400. Generally gets good reviews.

Well, good entry level electroacoustic are quite rare.

I do not know any of the guitar you listed (maybe because I do not look
at guitars with a nut width under 1 3/4").

My Alvarez AP66ESB and Eastman AC122ce sound great but have poor electronics.

My Seagull Performer CW QIT sounds good and came with good electronics.

Arrow 1 3/4" Nut

Ok, after doing much research and since I just barely started to learn; now I understand the difference between 1 11/16 and 1 3/4.

Unless there is anything else I need to know, I would like to go with a 1 3/4 Nut, which it seems that I have to look into Alvarez and Seagull.

Any other brands?

Are any Yamahas or Taylor with a 1 3/4 Nut?

Thanks!

Welcome to the AGF, pablitus!

The majority of Taylors have a 1 3/4" nut but the 114 / 214 are some of the exceptions. Play some 1 11/16" and 1 3/4" guitars, even if it's not what you want to buy, just to get a feel.

Another + for Seagull and/or Yamaha in your price range.
