Default Just spoke with Dan at Eastman

I just got off the phone with Dan at Eastman. He’s a product specialist for their guitar division.

Dan told me that the E1SS-LTD that I have has a sapele back and sides and an Adirondack top. “We had some Adirondack that wasn’t as cosmetically attractive and we decided to use it up in this special run with a dark finish covering up the imperfections,” he told me.

I do know that the sunburst version I have is a better sounding guitar than the natural finish example down at my local Eastman dealer....

Anyway, with the Adirondack top and the sapele back and sides there’s a nice enhancement to the treble response on my guitar. Although I try to avoid “tonewood determinism,” I have come to the conclusion that I like Adirondack tops on dreadnoughts, this guitar and my D-18 alike.

So what are your experiences along these lines?

I've never owned an Adirondack top dread, though I would love to, but what I can attest to is I do not care for Engleman over East Indian Rosewood. I have a dread with this wood combo and while loud enough, it seems to be easily overdriven when I really dig in to it.

I have the 12-fret "parlour" model from the same LTD run, the E1P-LTD, with the adirondack top and sapele back and sides. I bought it new from the Music Zoo in 2018 for around $600. It's a great little guitar that surprises and impresses everyone who plays it.

I have a couple of guitars with Adirondack tops and they sound great. I have one guitar with a Sitka top and it's my favorite. So I guess I agree with you, Wade.

Interesting Wade. I wonder if Martin made the CEO-7 with the Adirondack top and that very, very black Gibson-style sunburst finish for the same reason - to use up a stock of visually flawed Adirondack Spruce?

Ugliest Martin guitar I've ever seen. But the sound! Glorious!

Wade I have an Eastman E100-LTD. It is a 00 size 12 fret slothead with Adirondack top and sapelle back and side. It’s an open pore finish, lower priced limited edition that sounds way better then the price tag would indicate.

My brother in law has been trying to buy it off me since the day he played it almost 2years ago. But it is staying right here

Don’t like Adirondack on any new guitar, regardless of body shape/size. Just don’t like the harshness (for the style of music I play).

Great value guitar, I picked up a E10SS-Ltd last year for taking on holiday. Adirondack/Sapele, plays great, sounds great. Not the same quality as my Collings Guitars but value for money is stellar........and it sounds and plays fantastic.

I mentioned in your other thread that I have the natural version of your guitar. There’s definitely a nice snap to the notes. Maybe it’s the Adi, maybe it’s the Sapele. I don’t know but I like it.
My guitar already sounds broken in. I have/had a couple other adi topped guitars which definitely sounded tight for a while.

I got my first Adirondack top guitar a month ago, a new E20P. I wasn't sure what to expect. I've always heard that Adirondack takes time to open up. I was very happy with the way it sounded from day one. A month into it and maybe 60 hours of playing, it sounds even better.

Overall I'm amazed at the quality and value that Eastman guitars deliver.

I have an Eastman E100-Ltd - that's a small-bodied 12-fret guitar with an Adirondack top and sapele back and sides. It's possibly the best-sounding guitar I've owned, with bright trebles and a rich bass. The top is gorgeous: very pale, clean-looking wood in a satin finish. My wife will occasionally take stock of the appearance of one of my guitars and suddenly comment on its fine looks. This was one such case.

The weak spot on the guitar are the slothead tuners. They are a little imprecise and not the best quality, I think. One of these days I'll get them upgraded. The guitar is definitely worth that investment.

Yeah, the tuners and the pickup are parts I switched out right away on my Eastman. The pickup doesn’t get used in these stay-at-home pandemic times, but I’m definitely glad that I upgraded the stock tuners for some Schertlers I had on hand. They’re much smoother and more accurate than what was on there.

Wade, first off, Dan is one heckuva quality guy. I met him for the first time at Winter NAMM 2016, in Anaheim. We've been buds ever since (Eastman's facility is about an hour from our shop).

The only two guitars I have with Adi tops are both Eastmans, an E-40OM and an E-10SS. You've heard the 10SS sing. Don't get much finer.

I owned an E20D which comes with an Adirondack top. I sold it a few years ago.
I bought it used. it was 18 months old and had significant playing time on it.
It was a very loud guitar that projected better than any Sitka-topped instrument I ever played. The fact that it was fairly “broken in” made it smoother than a new one. To this day, I still miss that guitar.
