Default Up/down tuning a half step and strings life

I want to try some Optima gold plated strings on my fan fret acoustic, and ideally would like to test it out first by down tuning all strings a half step for easier playability. Yet, if it negatively effects the tone I would then need to bring everything up a half step of course. Or visa versa, I could start in standard, down tune to check tone, but then have to tune up again, which seems even worse potentially.

My question is thus; Will either up or down tuning a half step seriously degrade future tone, and if so is the negative effect likely to be equal going up or down?

If the strings were cheaper I obviously could have just bought two sets and experimented!
