Ah, the famous disappearing song! Also one of my favorites from the Doobies. On the Live at Wolf Trap DVD we finally got the story behind the disappearance of this song from the airwaves: In the second verse of this song, Tom Johnston speaks of his car being empty and says, "and the radio just seems to bring me down." Someone, somewhere, in radio management, took offense to this line. It spread and within days of it beginning its climb of the charts, it was snatched back off. The Doobies needed a single, so they floated the B side of this record... Black Water.
And THAT, is the rest of the story. By the way, on the original recording, the rhythm was played on both acoustic (left) and electric (right) guitars. On the electric guitar side, the chords were arpeggiated while being played through a Leslie rotating speaker system, giving a lush sound. On the verses, the Leslie was at slow speed, on the choruses it was at fast speed. I suspect it was Pat Simmons playing in his unique fingerstyle on his ES335, his choice of guitar at the time. He plays everything, including lead, with thumb and fingerpicks. On the acoustic side, they used a Martin guitar. I suspect they had their Martins hotrodded because the actions were low enough to do so pretty amazing stuff and because there was usually a bunch of fret buzz going on. Bob

This band probably had more influence on my playing than any other. I've listened to everything they've ever come out with, dating back to their origins. Owned most of their material at one time or another. Great song!!!
