Default Progress

Here is a picture of the sides all joined. It retains it's shape without being in the mold. When you see pictures of a side set in a mold with a lot of clamping devices to keep the sides in place that is not a good sign. What it means is when the clamps are gone it's the top and bottom that are under tension holding the sides in shape--I'm just say'n, that's not a good thing. It means that there are weird tensions going across your soundboard. In the event the guitar actually still sounds good, what will happen after a couple of or five years when the sides relax and everything changes? The sides are there to support the top and back not the other way around;

Here all of the kerfing is going on along with a the Cocobolo insert in the heel block that's for the offset strap button bevel;

Thanks for viewing.

Don't worry Tom I'm sure we can come to a reasonable agreement!

Thanks Nemoman,

I like it too. It's a very comfortable little guitar.

Today I got the back fitted and glued, tomorrow the top;

Cheers!

Great! Well for starters we have a nice Thuya burl to use for the back of the headstock;

I just love interesting stories, folklore, and unusual stuff. This Thuya burl is unbelievably beautiful. It looks more like stone with inclusions in it that it does a piece of wood. Man that is just super cool. It should look great on the back of the headstock....killer.

AND this is just for starters.... ; )

Mark,

Will you please elaborate on your earlier post about side-bending and clamps? I always thought that with moisture and heat, one could shape the wood. It would follow that, absent moisture and heat, they would not be unshaped.

I've more recently heard that using double sides further increases the stability and releases tension from top and back.

I'm just not sure that I understand clearly the scenario of clamping that concerns you.

Don't worry folks, I'm not building any guitars (personally).

Thanks Mark.

Chris

The point I was trying to make is the sides shouldn't depend on the top and back to hold them in shape. They shouldn't be introducing stresses across the top and back. When a bent side comes out of a side bender there is typically some spring back depending on the wood Indian Rosewood more than say Black Walnut etc. If the side still has a little dampness clamping it back into the side mold while it finishes drying sometimes is enough for it to keep it's shape, Often it takes a little touch up with a bending iron to true it up. Don't read too much into my saying it's a bad sign to see a lot of clamps holding the sides. Sometimes we use the clamps to secure the sides while sanding the radius for the top and sides. Sometimes we use the clamps to keep the sides from moving while the tops and back are being glued on. Again my issue was specifically for when the clamps are there just because the sides weren't correctly bent before glue up, that's the issue.

Hope that helps!
Mark
