Default X30 Fan Fret Feedback

Had some tremendous X30 Fan Fret feedback today. No, not speaker feedback but an unexpected critique response. Had my X30 Fan Fret (the Emerald Ruby Cross) in my local small high end guitar shop that carries the full lineup of Martin's, Gibson's, Taylor's and Breedlove's. One of the guy's that works there wanted to see it. None of the guy's there had ever heard of Emerald Guitars. The normally seriously straight faced owner was busy working on a customer's guitar with his back to us. I told the worker that the X30 was tuned to DADGAD and it's best to play it like you stole it. When he started playing the X30, the shop owner darn near dropped what he had in his hands, whipped around and proclaimed "what the heck is that? That is a way different sound, I like it!" The player loved getting a facefull of DADGAD goodness and said if he didn't know better he would have guessed it was a high end baritone. Those 2 reactions speaks volumes about the tonal quality of a fan fret X30. I've never seen either one of these guys have such a strong guttural involuntary reaction. Of course I was grinning from ear to ear.

Excellent

I’m intrigued by the tuning, though - I’ve never come across GADDAD before. What gauges do you use for that?

Yes very odd tuning. Couldn't find anything but here: https://www.gtdb.org/gaddad

Good story.

I'm dyslexic at times. I was in a hurry when I typed it, and the sun was in my eyes. That should of been DADGAD.

Thanks! I thought that DADGAD was what you probably meant - but didn’t want to assume.

My x20 sounds spectacular in a near variant, open D - DADF#AD - and lives in that tuning most of the time.

My X20-7, also a fan-fret, is quite imposing in both its ‘standard’ tuning - BEADGBE - and a ‘baritone’ variation - BEADF#BE. I’ve yet to explore the obvious ADADF#AD, because I’m afraid if I landed there, I might never leave

Now the rest of the story is that I also took in my X10 fan fret and let the guy play it (standard tuning & unplugged) first. The owner never even turned around to look and stated very matter of factly 'Now that sounds like a carbon fiber guitar" without those words being spoken beforehand. That's how discriminating that owners ear is, he's good at intimately knowing high end guitars. That made it even sweeter when his jaw hit floor when he heard the X30 fan fret.

I'm expecting my Emerald Fan Fret X30 in 3-4 weeks. I purchased it to play Celtic DADGAD songs. Great to hear your positive feedback.

Thx

That’s a lovely piece of veneer - what wood is it?

Are you leaving the bone its natural colour, or having them dye it?

I can't remember precisely what wood I chose. It is either Cocobola or Ziricote. I also have an X20 inbound with whichever wood is not on the X30. After a few weeks of evaluation I plan to sell one of them.

The bone is unstained.

That was my plan 5 years ago. I still have both of the guitars I was deciding on then. Good luck either way.
