Default Did U fret over keeping your fav guitar looking like new?

When your favorite guitar was new to you:

How much did you worry about it getting that first scratch or ding?

Do you still love it as much now that Willie Nelson might mistake it for his?

I've never worried about it. Guitars get dings and scratches. I've played over 1000 gigs and it's just what happens.

Smile Nah…

Sure, I like them to be pretty, but stuff happens…. Especially at gigs.

However, I want them to PLAY perfectly, and thus must do maintenance ! Or hire it done, hahahah

Off to change some strings right now

Cheers

Paul

This is a great question. The nicest guitar I own came "aged" from the factory, which I think is just a little corny, but it sounds so good that I don't really care. The bonus here is that I don't have to stress about trying to keep it in mint condition since it never was in the first place.

My other good guitar was 12 years old when I bought it, and while it had definitely been well taken care of, it came to me with the typical pick-scratches and swirls in the finish and whatnot. I don't have to worry about keeping that one mint, either, and while I'd never intentionally mistreat it, I'm looking forward to it developing a little more aesthetic "character" over the years.

I would not buy a high-end pristine guitar. I'd want to keep it as mint as possible, and every little nick and ding would bum me out.

I bought a Les Paul brand new in 1985 and obsessed for years with keeping it as perfect as possible. I've never been a gigging musician so my environments are pretty controlled.

But to answer your question, I don't fret about it but I do try to keep my guitar looking as pristine as possible. I don't like the banged up look.

I have 5 that I have managed not to ding. My Martin might have a spot or two.

It's nice that they look good when new, but I care much more about how they SOUND. Unless you do catastrophic damage then the sound isn't effected by a few bumps and bruises.

As I often suggest, re-read your old tattered copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit" and you'll come to a deeper understanding on the importance of appearance.

My latest is my first “aged” guitar (see sig). So any new dings, etc. just add value. I sleep like a baby.

My D41 and my Bourgeois both have dings and scratches! I was obsessive with it, at first, but I play out, quite often and they’re gonna get dinged up. I played my Bourgeois at a bluegrass festival yesterday, for 8-9 hours and sweated all over it! I just cleaned it up and it still looks great and sounds even better.

I've only bought one "new" acoustic guitar - all others were purchased second hand so I never fretted about keeping one looking like "new" - for me guitars are to be played, so in that pursuit they may pick up some marks or dings - that's just honest wear as far as I'm concerned. I certainly don't go out of my way to abuse guitars but I'm also not going to have a heart attack if my guitar picks up some dings. I always stay on top of maintenance as far as set ups and fret levelling etc. so my guitars keep playing and sounding great - a small ding isn't going to change that.

I do my best not to abuse any of my guitars, but dings and scratches happen.

I try to minimize risk by not putting them in situations that they maybe susceptible.

Well, that would be one advantage to having it relic'd.

My favorite is one the one that I know I'm never going to sell, so I don't worry too much about it.

It's the ones that I think I might want to move on that I really concern myself with the cosmetic condition.

I’ve only purchased two new. First was a Martin Custom D and I was pretty sad the time it got dinged. It was pretty susceptible to dings and marks from use. My other one is my GPC-15me but it had some weird finish spots on the top. I didn’t bother to return it cause it sounded so good and the slots don’t bother me. I’d rather not worry about it and just play em

No more careful than I am today: which is careful enough without obsessing.
