I have been a type 2 diabetic since 1987. I put myself on insulin when you could buy it at $20 a bottle. And yes , I am aware that Walmart still offers regular insulin at $25 but after seeing an endocrinologist, I went on 2 insulins and a dexcom . So much easier to manage. Later, I found out my legs were restless whenI was awake. Turned out to be peripheral neuropathy that I treat with pregabalin. Life is much better !

I've been watching my diet closely, checking my blood sugar level, and injecting insulin for the past six days. I went kayaking this morning, and got a blood sugar reading this afternoon of 142. YAY!!!!

I wholeheartedly encourage this. Going for serious diabetes education is vital. Especially getting info from a nutritionist. GP are not really up on the latest regarding food, so being able to talk to a specialist about nutrition is very very helpful. If there is a diabetes education on offer, GO, it is worth it.

This may sound cra-cra, but after doing my diabetes regimen for a week, I've found the process invigorating in that I'm monitoring and starting to take control of my health. My blood sugar numbers have dropped several hundred points in that short amount of time, my RLS has disappeared, I'm sleeping better and I feel great...

I've got to pat myself on the back - I just registered a blood sugar reading of 118. YAY!

I've also lost my taste (continue to test negative for COVID) and appetite so I've scrambled to find something I can eat/drink. As a result my pre-diabetes became full-blown diabetes. Prior to starting my insulin regimen, I'm watching the sugar content of everything that goes in my pie hole. The good news- BP was the lowest it's ever been; cholesterol (both kinds), sodium and chloride were low. All measurements except those related to blood sugars were within normal range...

I'd love to hear from other diabetics as to their initial experiences with an insulin regimen. Thanks....
Most patients I encounter with RLS are on some type of medication that has been approved as effective for RLS, the most common or these being gabapentin.

I wanted to bring interested folks up-to-date as to what's going on with my blood sugar/diabetes. I went to the doctor the other day, and she said that she'd never seen a diabetic patient progress so well and so quickly. While I still inject 10 units of long-term acting insulin (Lantus Solostar) every morning, I've all but eliminated the quick-acting insulin (Humalog) because my numbers have consistency stayed under 150 and as low as 114. I charted my blood sugar readings on a graph, and the doctor said that she'd never had a patient that did that.

I know that I'm not out of the woods, and I'll have to fight this battle for whatever time I've got left. However, the RLS has disappeared, and I sleep very well every night. My lack of sleep was making me feel very despondent; but now that I'm sleeping well, my mental outlook has changed for the better. In short, I feel great and have energy I hadn't experienced for a long time...

Good news, Randy.

Disruption of sleep can send anyone into a dark place.

That's definitely true. In the movie, Insomnia, with Al Pacino and Robin Williams, Pacino plays a detective from the lower 48, and went to Alaska to investigate serial killings perpetrated by Williams, if you can believe that. One of the subplots was Pacino's descent into mental instability because he couldn't sleep during 24 hours of daylight.

It was the lack of solid sleep for 3-4 months that ultimately led me to my doctor. Blood tests were part of the check-up, and my blood sugar-related numbers were off-the-chart. My doctor initiated the insulin regimen immediately, and I began watching my diet very closely. They went from the 400s to 125 (yesterday) in two weeks, and the doctor thought it was nothing less than miraculous.

She speculated that RLS would disappear as my blood sugar numbers decreased, and it has. At one point, my doctor asked if the lack of sleep had caused depressive symptoms or if depression had caused lack of sleep. I said that without a doubt my lack of sleep had increased feelings of depression. Now that my blood sugar is under control and solid sleep has returned, a positive mental outlook is fully restored. I told the doctor the other day that my lack of sleep, diabetes diagnosis and insulin regimen are the best things that could have happened to me. I feel great....

Don’t get medical advice on the internet, especially not on a guitar forum.

Cheers,
Steve

I think that my posts clearly indicate that I've gotten my medical advice and prescriptions through doctors and a pharmacist from the University of Virginia Medical Center. I'll also be meeting with a nutritionist from UVa next week....

UPDATE: My blood sugar level has stayed under 150 since 8/9, have not needed to take the quick-acting insulin (Humalog) only 10 units of long-term insulin (Lantus Solostar) daily, no more RLS, and enjoying 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. My energy level and overall mental outlook are amazing. YAY!

So glad that things have improved so much, so quickly. Congrats! That takes discipline. And for sure improving glucose levels has a wide ranging effect, including sleep.

I would like to clear up something. Did you ever get an official, by a qualified-sleep-doctor, diagnosis of RLS; not a I-think-it-is RLS, but a fully worked up diagnosis? Just curious.
