Some people's grandpas bought Loars, some bought department store ukes. Some widows held on to Loars, some sold them off. Some grandsons have no interest in music but still feel attached to things. My feelings are that with the net, fewer instruments linger in closets.

Not a "holy grail" on Loar level, but recently I have acquired my dad's old Gibson A40, probably 1963. It hadn't been played in at least 15 years and had spent its life out of its case, hanging on a wall, in the upper midwest. It now has a couple sealed cracks, new frets, a new nut and a sublime setup done by a friend. It is fun to play and rings out with a dry, hollow sound. There is nothing quite like these old treasures brought back to music again.

Several years ago, a friend of mine showed up at our weekly music gathering with a mandolin. He said that a friend had asked him to work on it for her and set it up. He took it out of the old case and I looked inside the f-hole and saw that it was a 1924 signed and dated Lloyd Loar.

I said to him,” Ted, do not touch this mandolin. Tell your friend to take it to Elderly and have it appraised.”

She took it over and they consigned it for $135,000. It was in very fine shape.

She had gotten it form an old uncle who’d kept it under the bed for years. The scary part was that she’d been carrying it around in the back seat of her car for a couple weeks! Yikes.

It was a beauty.

A Dumble amp was found and purchased here in Bakersfield last week. The guy that bought it is and LA studio player. I'm sure he got it for a fair price. I don't think he could have afforded the $80,000 and up some are getting.
