Sustain and resonance are inversely related: the more the body and neck system vibrate, the more they absorb string energy that would cause sustain.

No, many times if the guitar is vibrating heavily, the resonance steals energy from the the string shortening the sustain. And I know you're asking honestly! I think in a good instrument you can find a good balance of resonance to sustain. That said, a set of lightly microphonic pickups can pickup the resonance of a guitar, and give it a more woody tone. That's why a lot of people with resonant guitars prefer un-potted PAF style pickups, as potting in a pickup, hinders the ability of the pickup to sense the body vibrations.

Default Sustain

Sustain really shines with a slide. Although you can make sustain with electronics as previously mentioned. A rosewood or ebony fretboard and a mahogany body seem to be magic with a slide!

Seem to get more resonance with a maple board and alder body.
