Here's a humble offering of my own from our recent trip.

We got to Varanassi just in time to see the sunrise on the Ganges.

Yep I agree with the others here that these shots are really great. I'm a long time amatuer photographer but only recently devoting some degree of concentration towards street stuff. I'm curious as to what lens you're using? I've always been a wide angle, prime guy and I just get so uncomfortable getting personal and up-close enough with my 35 or 50 primes especially here in L.A. where it seems folks are predominantly "not cool" with street photo's. I'm thinking' my next lens will be a tele in the 70-200 mm range so I can keep some distance while still catching some natural feel.

Thoughts?

Hi Joseph, I appreciate your feedback. Most of these were shot with my Sony RX100 MV which has a focal range of 24 to 70mm. I am never comfortable taking surreptitious photos of strangers. Not saying I never do it, but I feel like it's sneaky and invasive. I'm no photojournalist. I want to take pictures of people who want to have their pictures taken. I step up to them and hold the camera up with a smile and a questioning gesture, or just ask, "May I take your photo?" They smile and look right at the camera, sometimes strike a pose. Those are my best results!

What I've found, particularly in developing countries, is that people often enjoy when visitors take an interest in them and they like to have their picture taken, and love to see it when it's done. And it's sort of a one shot, spontaneous deal. Candids are great, but not as satisfying to me. I'm probably just too hesitant to get good ones. (Although I have many beautiful candids of my friends and family.)

Of these 2 photos, the one with the boy and his grandmother is much more compelling to me than the one I took of the couple on the railway platform.

Both compelling shots but I agree the young boy with grandmother is really endearing. I’ve been to India (a few years back) but it was for work and the thought of photography was far from my mind. I will say of all the places I’ve visited in this world India, for its vibrancy, color and endlessly beautiful, gentle, kindly souls is absolutely magical. A photographer’s dream world. Maybe just a plain and simple anyone’s dream world.

You’re pics perhaps inspire me to go back before it’s too late for me

You are so right about India being a magical place and photographer's dream. There is something about it, I struggle to name. It got into my head and touched me inside. Everywhere I went I wanted to point my camera. But I didn't want to treat the people as if they were animals in a zoo, so I asked for their permission. I plan to go back next year.

I do agree that the smaller camera is less intimidating than a DSLR. The bigger camera looks so expensive; it screams, "rich westerner" and it creates more distance.

Well Joseph, I hope you will go back to India. And when you do, don't miss Varanasi or Chanderi!

I've been fine ever since I had the laproscopic procedure to tack my abomasum back in place. Thanks for asking! I try to watch my dry matter intake and I switched to a higher grade feed (Blue Buffalo).

Oh, and absolutely no beef with this thread. It's my new Nat Geo channel!
