Default The AGF Commandment thread for Newbies

Despite all of our controversial threads about Tone-rites, soundports, strings and the swapping out guitar pins, there are some truisms that I have gleaned over the years.

Let me start: Every guitar should have a good set-up.

Every guitar should be wiped down after each use.

Start learning where the notes are on the fretboard. Just learn a few at a time and soon you will have them all down. This will provide a great foundation which will help you learn faster.

PDF you can print out of the notes on the fretboard

There is no short cut to getting good at playing guitar. It takes focused practice. Lots of it.

It's perfectly Ok NOT to like a particular guitar player, style of music or brand of guitar.

However, people who DO like that artist/brand/music don't need to hear your views expressed in a derisive or disrespectful way.

It is possible to not like someone/something yet still respect them.

Focused practice is absolutely required, however...
Find music that is compelling, to you,
and the effort of practice is lost in the joy of achievement
right from the start.

Play as many guitars as you can . Try different makes and models and sizes and wood combinations and nut widths.

Find what works for you . Don't worry about the name on the headstock or what famous people play.

Buy the best guitar within your budget. Play what you like and like what you play.

Put your guitar back in the case after you wipe it off and clean the strings.

If you're happy with your guitar - don't "upgrade" it because of something you read here.

I don't know what the best guitar/pick/strings/pins/saddles/nuts are. I just know what I've found I like. We will however, discuss it to no end.

A few lessons can go a long way for a complete beginner. Good habits are easier to learn upfront than later.

All of these are superseded and and made redunandant by this one:

"The AGF search button is your friend. You are welcome among guitar friends here, but save yourself (and everyone) time and trouble. Before posting a question that might have already been discussed countless times, click that search button."
