Default acoustic guitar made of bamboo wood?

Luna Guitars makes an acoustic guitar out of bamboo wood. Here it is:

Just wondering why there aren't more made from bamboo wood, and what the positives and negatives might be?

Now matter how hard to try...a guitar made out of balsa wood just will not fly? Sorry it was too easy?

It's not balsa wood...it's bamboo, and Yamaha make/made a model out of bamboo wood...or they used to anyway, not sure if they still do.

Bamboo isn't really a very good shape for guitar making.

That Luna travel guitar cited in Post 12 has a 14-piece back, if I counted right.

But hey, maybe some day, who knows.

IMHO, balsa wood is too soft for guitars.

Sorry. I meant to type bamboo. I'll blame it on my cancer meds. Still alive and kicking and playing, but cognitive abilities, keyboard mistakes, memory etc are all suffering.

Bamboo isn't wood. It is grass. It just grows pretty big.

Bamboo is incredibly tough and hard and straight grained. In Asian cities its common to see scaffolding on high rise buildings all made from bamboo - they prefer it to steel. Makes great floors, traditional longbows and recurves, etc. Can't see why it wouldn't make a good guitar aside from the joints.

Heck, I had problems before my cancer meds. Keep on keeping on!

Our house in California has bamboo floors.

Sounds like a guitar ...

Why not?

The small body and 22" scale length probably don't give a good indication of what one could get out of bamboo as a material from which to make guitars, particularly as back and sides with a coniferous top.

Not inexpensive:

Bamboo... Grows very quickly and easily... Could be an abundant "tone-grass" if the tonal qualities are there...

But I bet it's a pain in the rear end to flatten it before using it.

Same technology as making bamboo flooring, cutting boards or other flat bamboo products: cut it into segments and then edge-glue the segments to make a flat panel.
