I got a 12 string as my college graduation gift earlier this year.

Just caught this thread so please ignore if I'm repeating previous comments but perhaps your sons are discouraging the purchase so they can surprise you with one at Christmas

Maggie surprised me with an entry level Epiphone about 20 years ago. It was a great playing guitar with a laminated top, but it sounded good enough that I recorded one song on it.
I kept it tuned a tone low with a Paige capo permanently on the second fret. It came off only for string changes. My brother now owns it and I am currently without a 12-string. But I borrow it back when I need one. The Epiphone epsilon logo fell off the pick guard soon after I got it.

How can the instrument so closely associated with David Bowie not be cool!?
I'm 31 and owned a Yamaha FG820-12 for a short period (impulse buy). Was a good guitar, lovely finish for the cost and great sound, but I ended up swapping it for a Breedlove Mandolin with a guy on gumtree - a different instrument trumps a guitar I don't really need. One thing I noticed is the 12 string is really lovely for slowly strummed songs like Bob Dylan's When The Deal Goes Down. |

Because your sons are giving you a hard time is precisely the reason to buy it (besides the fact that 12 strings are fun.) I mean, if we can't embarrass our kids, we have not fulfilled our responsibilities as a father. :-)
I have three grown, wonderful children. But in their teen years, it was so easy to embarrass them it wasn't even sporting. Ducks in a barrel. BTW, I played the Martin at guitar center, and the Guild (probably laminate) jumbo 12. I like them both! And not that hard to tune with a Snark. They were really fun to play and now I have my eye on that Martin X1. Buy the guitar, Pappy! :-)

Sometimes our children are like their mothers.
Too much common sense when it comes to purchasing something that isn't actually necessary. How abut you saying something to them the next time they go shopping for a new video game and or player.

This thread is hilarious.
Op: are 12 strings for old guys? All of us: heck no! Show your kids this song from 50 years ago to change their mind. |

If our kids gave me a hard time about my 12 strings, I'd sell them .......................... the kids that is!

Every acoustic guitarist should consider having a 12-stringer in the stable as a change of tone. It may only be played every now and then, for a few songs, but the experience is uplifting!

That's how I feel about the high strung guitar.
