Smile Yay storms...

Bruce, these instruments are all so lovely! I sure hope I get to play one or more of yours at B.I.G.

Send some rain south, as we could use more now...

That Maple Schoenberg sure had me drooling!

Cheers

Paul

Some time after I have passed and the dust has settled (assuming our civilization survives) discriminating guitar buffs are likely to wonder what makes my guitars work as well as they do. I do try to reveal any differences that may exist both by being open about my thinking and process, and by documenting my work in photos. In truth, I am only aware of some of those differences, and have learned of several of them from those of you who do look at my photos. Thank You for that!

I struggled today to make a tighter radius in my cutaway that I usually do. The so-called "Schoenberg Cutaway" (thank you, Dana) looks good to me on the bigger guitars but using the same radius on an 0 like this one means that the little straight (3/4" on an OM, and it's not actually straight) between the two curves that exists on an OM does not exist on an 0. This has always bothered me on the "Companion", as I often fondly refer to my overhead friendly small guitars when calling them by name.

I endeavored to make it happen on this one:

As I expect to close the 0-P box today and get it off of the dish it is clamped to, it is time to commit to some wood or other for the second FT-0 I started a couple of months ago. I had thought I would make it a modest (relatively inexpensive) instrument and use one of the Genuine Honduran mahogany sets I have been toting around for about 30 years now. I have more sets than I am liable to use by maybe 10 times (time will tell).

But that's not very exciting. So I looked at my Sapele and Koa etc etc and noticed that I had a set of highly flamed H. mah that I was never going to be able to sell as premium wood. Not because it isn't actually, but because I have better. And I'm not going to use that up either. So I decided to pull this set out of the corner and use it . . . and not upcharge for it in the interest of keeping the "relatively affordable" part of the equation going.

Here is the 0-Hmah back, joined today:

And here is the 0-P waiting for the back:

Going a bit slower than expected as I didn't like the way the back braces looked and chose to rebrace the back.

The rest of the "P" box is ready to receive:

I have closed both of the single 0's and am making the binding for them.

Good to hear you (other) John.

I have the binding on the tops of both single 0's, but not the backs, yet. I will be interested to hear which cutaway has more appeal, though I must say: they will both look very much better to me when the fingerboard is in place.

Now I may be bragging, but I find getting this miter perfect with the .010 lines pretty challenging:

The two different cutaways are really interesting...I like them both, but will withhold my vote until the necks are on as well!!!

Yesterday (X-Day) we drove up to the play in the snow, as has become traditional in my little family unit. This is somewhere along highway 89 which runs along the west side of Lake Tahoe, about 3 car hours east of my home. Some of you see a lot more snow than we do, so this seems special to us.

Josh and Linda and Laurelyn with Koal and Mickey, the dogs.

Here are the two single 0's with their binding now complete:

And, individually,

Mahogany:

Both the dogs and the guitars look to be twins... Stunning woods and craft (as usual) !

Finally got a couple days off to run north and spent an afternoon catching up with Bruce, and had a chance to really look at these 2 bodies. The material is beautiful - these pics do not do it justice, but once the finish goes on, I think its gonna really pop. And the tap on these boxes is awesome - the pernambuco is probably going to be one of his finest, and it was particularly nice seeing one of the euro tops Bruce picked up in Cremona being used, but the mahogany is what I’m really looking forward to hearing.

I also had the opportunity to pick up a few of the guitars he had in the rack. First, or course, the black limba, which we dragged around Italy but I hadn’t seen for a few months, is sounding really great - the mad rose, pernambuco, jatoba, all great instruments with subtleties of tone and character that would make choosing any one of them very difficult for me - but by and far, my favorite was a lovely little mahogany and german sweetheart that was a joint effort between Bruce and his daughter - maybe the ultimate improvement on a Sexauer guitar is to have 2 Sexauers work on it - ;-)
