Martin D42 buying used what to look for?
Hi everyone
I’m new to the forum but in the past everytime I google a guitar review or specifications on a guitar this forum comes up so I thought I would join I’m in the market for a Martin D-42, I’ve only owned 2 other Martins before a 1967 D-18 from a trade and a Martin OMJM After reading many of the threads on the D-42 here I was somewhat sold on one. Was planning to buy used wanted to know if there’s anything I should look out for on certain years? What type of questions to ask? Thank you

Re: D-42
Welcome to the Forum! Big fan of the D-42, myself (I have three in various woods)!
I doubt you'd find one that has not been well cared (not really a beater) for but the biggest thing to look for are any cracks in the wood and the angle of the neck set. A neck reset would run you around $400 depending upon your locale. I think the D-42 started in the lineup around '96 or so, so none much older than 20 years. No notable changes in the years that come to mind. The neck was the low profile with 1 11/16" nut width and forward shifted top bracing. I don't know if it's changed to the PA taper and 1 3/4" with the redesign this year? Always good to take an inspection mirror with you as it shows the seller you're serious . If you are buying from long distance make certain you have a return available and then have a local luthier do an inspection for you. The Forum Sponsors might be able to help you out as well. Just an FYI but the D-41 is now braced like the D-42 as of 2018. I prefer the snowflake inlays myself though. Best of luck! Last edited by Quake17; 06-25-2018 at 03:02 PM. |

In addition to looking for a D-42, you should look into finding a D-42K, as well. Structurally it's the same instrument, with the same excellent scalloped bracing and abalone trim, but in the D-42K the back and sides are made out of koa:
Martin D-42K I've played a bunch of both rosewood D-42's and koa D-42K's, and while there were a couple of the rosewood ones I wasn't wowed by, ALL of the koa ones were guitars I would have liked to own. So consider those, as well. Hope this helps. Wade Hampton Miller |

I plan to get a D42 at some stage when funds allow, but I would like the torch inlaid headstock instead of the
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXC M F XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXA XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXR XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXT XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXI XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXN ....style headstock Like these ones: What version or vintage of the D42 should I be looking for?

There's a real good looking '08 model posted on both the UMGF and Mandolin Cafe.
