Oak really does make a good sounding guitar. I have made two now, one with a spruce top, if memory serves me well, and the other with a cedar top. They both could hold up very nicely against more exotic woods. Neither was bog oak so the difference that makes is yet to be revealed.
If asked to compare the timber of the sound oak makes i can only say that it reminds me of maple.

The top has such pronounced silking that it’s better described as having micro curl. Incredible tap tone. Bell like.




The back is black with typical well quartered oak markings. Very dense.



The sides are likewise black.



We could use bog oak for the fingerboard as well.

Thanks Han! Your gorgeous LS/ABW build convinced me to go with LS. I am curious how the two guitars will differ. Hopefully they (and we) will meet some day.

They will, at the very least, rub shoulders in John’s workshop at different stages of their birth. We should meet! Along with all the other JK crazies… you know who you are.

I saw John mention ambonya burl. I recall some moments on his porch:

That’s some LS x Bog Oak x Ambonya Burl right there! I was almost 100% certain I wanted Ambonya highlights on mine until I saw that crazy quilted maple.

Perhaps I am crazy, but I don't think so. John's guitars are so FUN to play. Life is short, and uncertain too. Play the best dang instruments you find work for YOU!

And if you can't find just what you want and need, talk to John Kinnaird. This man does love a challenge from time to time. Hahahaha

Tom, you are a prince among men for your generosity in hosting BIG, and I know I am missing out on literally the best possible luthier event - one where you can actually hear the guitars and get to know an amazing group of luthiers and a wonderful group of fellow deranged guitar freaks (I mean that in the best possible way!). If there was any doubt, concerning guitars, these are the good old days, and you are an important part of that. I mean that - it is so cool what you are doing for the AGF community. But I get to buy really really nice guitars, and I am not complaining.

Jamie mentioned wanting a stained glass effect in the rosette made of natural woods with splashes of abalone thrown in here and there.,

Sooo.


Pieces of wood and black separation bars glued to a thin black wood (probably died poplar) veneer.




I was thinking of stopping at this point but was reminded how much trouble it would be to inlay the rosette as is.


Excess trimmed away, and let into the top



Final version with black /curly mahogany /black purfling lines inside and out.

Very very nice John. You know I am a big fan of your shadow rosettes, but I think this one beats those hands down!
