You know it's funny how time and memory change things. On an impulse I joined the army at 17 and before I turned 18 and actually went, regretted it. We had a delayed entry then. Probably for guys just like me, ha ha. I mostly hated it, somebody always telling you what to do, tuck in your shirt, cut your hair, tuck your pant into your boots!
But now 40 years later I only remember the good. There was a very interesting mix of people in the Infantry in the early 70s. Blacks and Chicanos and Puerto Ricans and foolish white farm boys like me. Plus quite a few who chose enlistment over going to trial, lol. I did not go to Vietnam as it had ended for most American ground soldiers. So had a safe time. I met and served under great officers. Foremost among them 1 Lt. Russel Honore. The Ragin Cajun, who later led the Louisiana Natl. Guard after Katrina in New Orleans. And there are other friends I have not seen in decades but I know are still my friends. Anyway thanks for the Veterans Day Salute, and the memories. |

Several stores in the area offer 10% off purchases year round by showing a form of military ID.
Inevitably they thank me for my service. Like I tell them, Thank you for thanking me. USAF 1986-1990 |

It was my honor to serve. 1981-2001. Now I have the honor of attending grade school assemblies with my Grandson.

I often feel awkward when I wear my old navy ball cap with my old ship on it and people thank me for my service. I followed in my late father’s and several uncles’ footsteps - several of whom served in naval aviation as I did. I joined right out of high school to earn money for college but found the experience to be much more educational that the four years I spent in college afterwards. I remember during quiet times how I missed campus life but if anything, college helped validate my enlistment and filled in the blanks as to what I’d seen and I actually got on the dean’s list. Because of that and the many memories I consider having served as a privilege.
