My first guitar was a $40 Aria in 1971. Served me well for a couple of years, action wasn't terrible, my fingertips only bled after playing for a couple of hours!

I bought one cheap from a thrift store, it was a piece of **** but I bought it because I liked the shape of the neck and wanted to reproduce it. Ended up removing the top and putting a cedar one on instead. Sounded bad at first, not too much better after. The back was dead and did not let the top to do its thing.
