Just another option. Taylor and Collings both make great guitars. Rather than pit one company against the other sell one Brazilian and get an adi mahogany om for a different tonal palet.

Negative on the deal. Stay with the Taylors and save your pennies for the rainy day.

The Collings is $8000 bucks, so I would have to sell/trade in both of my Taylor's, plus put some extra money down to afford that price.

I agree... I'd likely do the trade even without the opportunity to try the Collings in advance.

Get rid of the Taylor and get a real guitar like a Collings. There you go, I said it.

I wouldn't buy a Braz Collings. I would buy an EIR Collings with a German top. Collings guitars have so much presence you really don't need Braz and it can sometimes be too metallic. Save your money. Think EIR, Bill does wonderous things with it.

I'll have to admit to personal bias on this having owned 5 Collings guitars and a Collings mandolin. And I don't mean to offend anyone, but...comparing a Taylor to a Collings? Really? I'll also have to admit it's been a while since I played a Taylor. The last one I played (20th Anniversary OM) was a huge disappointment. Maybe they've come a long way since then? I can't honestly say?
And they (Taylor vs Collings) really don't sound anything alike as I recall. I've read that the "Robert Taylor" guitars are pretty nice. I don't know a lot about Taylor guitars but I have never thought of them as comparable to Collings guitars, in any way. If they're comparable to Collings then they're also comparable to Huss & Dalton, high end Martins (Authentics), Bourgeois, Santa Cruz, Kopp, Walker, etc. Are Taylors really in that league? But, as I've stated many times here before...What the heck do I know? Tom Last edited by drbluegrass; 01-31-2013 at 04:49 PM. |

Perhaps this is odd, but what my often humbling experiences have shown me is that everyone - from Seagull to Ervin friggin' Somogyi - is capable of making an instrument that I don't particularly care for. That brazilian collings is only 8K so I'm assuming it's used. One thing's for sure - at least one person already doesn't want it.
Maybe it's worth noting to you that most of the Collings guitars I've played I have preferred to Taylors. For me, that's not enough to convince me to give up two guitars I already like PLUS put money down on something I haven't even played... ![]()

@usb_chord - yes, it is used... and you have made probably the best point yet... Someone else has already gotten rid of it... Then again, they may have been starving because they bought it new and needed food money

If you've got two high-dollar Taylors and both are sweet guitars, keep them. For one thing, no guitar is worth $8000. I don't care if God made it, unless you can immediately re-sell it and make more money off of it, it's not worth it.
Collings makes great guitars, but are they 2-3 times better than your Taylors? Only on Fantasy Island. Enjoy the two sweet guitars you have. It's a bad trade and even worse if you have to throw-on some cash. Everyone has their favorite brand of guitar, and that's fine. Which one sounds better, is made better, has better wood, etc. is all very subjective. It depends on who you ask.............Somewhere along the line, commonsense has to prevail on what one pays for a guitar. If one is a collector, then they know how to make money by buying/selling guitars. If one is simply someone who loves playing guitar, once you get past 2-grand or so, there's not much difference. And wood is wood. Some vary in the tone and volumn they can produce, but that too depends on who you ask.......We make our own choices, but in any deal similar to this I'd keep my Taylors or my Collings or my Gibsons, etc.

Well, there's a German/EIR C10 for sale in the classifieds now for like a quarter of the price of the Braz OM
