Default Luthiers in Montreal Quebec area

I have a friend in Montreal that might be interested in an acoustic guitar build locally. I know of Mario Beauregard, but can anyone give me some other names? Thanks [emoji120]

Depends on what you mean by locally. Mark Hatcher is right across the border in Vermont.

In Montréal:
Théo Kazourian
Hayotuk (Bernard Vachon, in Longueuil)

Not what you asked for, but these luthiers are in Québec:
Michel Pellerin
Benoît Lavoie
Julien Sublet

All of these luthiers will be exhibitors at the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase this October (Mark Hatcher, as well).

Luckily for your friend, there are A LOT of luthiers in Montreal and Quebec. I'm not sure how you could measure it, but my feeling is that Montreal must be up near the top of the list for luthiers per capita. It's mostly due to two public (essentially free) three year luthier programs in both Montreal and Quebec City as well as some unbelievable government support for the arts and starting businesses.

Does your friend have a rough price range they're looking at? And is it for a standard steel string acoustic? The shop I co-founded, the Mile End Guitar Coop, has 10 luthiers all building different types of guitars at a variety of price ranges. With a little more info I'd be happy to pass along some names!

Thanks!! I'm thinking right in Montreal would be the best for an introduction into the single luthier guitar build in this guitar player's life, so the Theo and Hayotuk suggestions are good people to start with...

Very interesting! He plays acoustic steel string, and I think for a first build in a person's life, it has to be near the lower end of prices, so I wouldn't suggest anybody more than 12k or so I think...he has some nice brand guitars, like Martin, etc. I also think it would be cool for him if the luthier was nearby (he lives in Old Montreal neighborhood), so he could have a lot of personal interaction and visit the shop easily....

I am guessing that starting build prices for Greenfield and Beauregard would likely significantly exceed the stated budget target? Mr. Kennedy sounds like a great resource for further investigations into the local community.

I have had the opportunity to meet a number of the young Canadian builders - named here and elsewhere - at the LaConner Guitar Show over the past couple of years and can attest to the fact that they build beautiful and great sounding instruments as well as being very nice and interesting people!

Thanks!! That's my opinion too, and I think it would really be great for him to connect with a local luthier and actually be able to drop by and establish a friendship too.

If he's just in Old Montreal, he should definitely come by the shop for a visit! We're in the Plateau/Mile-End area just just a few metro stops north. It's a pretty fun shop to visit for guitar enthusiasts with so much going on and so many different types of guitars being built (and some pretty amazing ones at that). We're not a storefront so it's definitely best to get in touch to arrange a time to come by if he's interested!

I can attest to this, fun place to visit! Though Mike hasn’t stated it, his prices likely falls within your friends budget and he builds great guitars. He would be a great commission, for a first build
