If it is not rigid then it can absorb acoustic energy from the top and dampen the sound and might even emit sound itself. For example, a lose internal part, or if its case is cracked, or its potting has separated from its case, in other words: broken. I wouldn't think this is common with reasonably new products but I guess it can happen and is maybe more likely with vintage gear.
