Default "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg (cover)

This is my cover of Dan Fogelberg's wonderful tribute to his father released in 1981. I used my 1967 Martin D-35 to play this song, a guitar given to me when I turned 21 by my own father.

This song is also a great Travis picking lesson.

Thanks for listening!

Nice rendition Glen.
Some may disagree, but I think Dan Fogelberg is completely underrated and ignored. Some of his best stuff most people never even heard.

I would love to hear your take on this one.

I remember Dan Fogelberg and his songs. I had his Souvenirs album.
Leader of the band was a song, I believe, on a different album.
You played it well. Sounded great on that D-35.
Brought back memories of my father. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rokdog!

Thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment!

I agree with you about Dan Fogelberg; he was a terrific songwriter and performer and I think to a great extent much of his work is unknown to most people. I listened to the song you linked and I thought it was great! But, even I had never heard this song before. I'm sure there are some holes in my own Dan Fogelberg songbook knowledge.

I just started working on his song, "Longer," a video on this song that I hope might coincide with my wife and my 52nd wedding anniversary coming up soon. At least this is a song that many people know.

And the reality is that the large majority of people listen only to music they already know. I don't know why that is -- lack of curiosity? Too much effort? I have no idea.

That's why I do covers these days and don't waste time putting up YouTube videos of my own original songs. Nobody cares if it's not something they already know.

Thanks for your thoughts, Rockdog! Be well out there!

- Glenn

Hi Westview!

Thank you! I'm glad you thought this came across well!

I had Dan Fogelberg's Souvenir album, too. In fact, I had (or have) a fair number. They're out in a box in the garage somewhere; I should go find all those vinyl albums.

I'm glad this song brought back memories for you.

What I really like about "Leader of the Band" is that Dan Fogelberg could lay out such a touching tribute to his dad, who must have been a fairly gentle soul. I think that expression of love in actual words between father and son is fairly rare, and so for DF to do that in a public song is pretty remarkable.

Take care W!

- Glenn

Thank you Tom!

It's wonderful to hear from you! I'm so glad you enjoyed this!

Thank you, too, for the compliment on the sound quality. I am very fortunate to have some decent equipment, and I have been working at audio recording for a good long while.

I have been enjoying your videos, as well! Be well, Tom!

That was great! I've always loved that song and you certainly did it justice.

The Innocent Age is a remarkable album filled with incredible songs, great playing and wonderful production/audio quality.

Maybe you can do "Nexus" next?

"In the Passage" is also a great tune. And of course "Same Old Lang Syne".

Oh heck, just cover the entire album!

Thank you EG!

I'm really happy that you thought this came out well!

I do think I have the Innocent Age album from the past. I really do need to go out and find those old records!

I used to listen to Dan Fogelberg a fair amount, but somehow I got away from that habit. I have only covered one other DF song, "The Reach," shown below.

As I mentioned above, I am currently working on "Longer," which is a song my wife and I performed for years at wedding ceremonies.

I should spend more time again with Dan Fogelberg's music. He was a good singer and a good guitar player, and there is always a lot to learn from a player like that. It's a shame he died relatively young.

Thanks so much for watching and for your comments! I hope all is well for you!

Nice Glenn. You can do DF all day as far as I'm concerned. He was so incredibly talented. Excellent job on a classic.

Thank you Mike!

How nice to hear from you!

Yes, Dan Fogelberg was a terrific acoustic player, a model performer for so many of us. And he was a good song writer, too!

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment! I hope all is well for you, Mike!
