Vicariously thrilled! So much fun to watch as the student gains first hand feel for "making music".

That Padauk is one scrumptious set. Go Kevin!

Default Day-2!

Day-2 started with the promise of another fun day and did not disappoint! First we had to catch up and finish the remaining Day-1 tasks, starting with gluing the top braces in one direction...

While those braces were drying in the go-bar deck, we moved on to bending and installing the kerfed linings. Kinnaird West uses reverse-kerf linings for a stiffer side assembly. This time I was able to get in on the fun of bending without too much stress of failure...

Gluing in the top linings...

Prior to installing the back linings the rim assembly needed to be profiled to shape for the back linings. That's where this wonderful and exciting device comes in. There is sandpaper on the bottom of the wood cross bar which is used to sand down the rim assembly as you slide from butt to heel. lather, rinse, and repeat a few thousand times and you're done!

Once that was completed, the back linings were bent and installed. So here we have the completed rim assembly...

The remaining braces were then glued up...

The big reveal of the headstock face plate after drilling the tuner holes. The master shows me the way...

Next up was carving the back braces. This is truly where the mojo happens--braces are different heights in all the locations with different profiles to boot. And all this information kept in Ryan's marvelous memory. So I got to watch Ryan carve one--he made it look so easy. How hard can it be? So I gave it a shot--I didn't butcher them too badly, but it took me about 5 times as long! Good thing there was always sandpaper to smooth things out and cover up the blemishes...

Not shown is the terrifying process of routing out the soundport with a hand-held Dremel! In actuality, it really wasn't too bad--I wasn't a hero though and made darn sure I kept back from the outline!

Finally after the sanding the back linings in the sliding torture device, it was time to fit the back to rim assembly. The brace locations are carefully marked with a dental pick...

The rest of Day-2 to follow. Stay tuned!

Default Day-2 (con't.)!

Wrapping up Day-2

After marking the back brace locations, it's time to rout out the brace pockets into the linings. Another slightly terrifying event using the Dremel to rout out the pockets in the lining but not go through the sides--challenging at best. Don't ask me how I know this...

After trimming the back braces to length it was time to glue on the back to the rim assembly...

Definitely an exciting moment in time...

Steve is an artist with making the neck come together. Here he's gluing on the Moradora backplate...

It took a bit of persuasion...

So that's it--Day-2 is a wrap! More to come...

All this brings back wonderful memories. I'm happy for you that you got to experience this for yourself, and it looks like it's shaping up to be a killer guitar.

Default Kinnaird Student Build

This guitar is shaping up nicely and very nice selection of tone woods. Look forward to seeing more and hopefully in person at some point.

Hey Dan--thanks for helping to pave the way with your build. We're hoping for goods things with this guitar--all indications are pointing to success. We'll find out soon enough!

If all goes well, you'll see it at BIG III!

Default Day-3!

Day-3 continues the fun and adventure!

First up was to catch up with a few things from the previous day that we didn't make it to. First the fretboard was cut to shape--no heroes here. It was cut to approximate size and then the edges taken down on the sander...

Then a radius was sanded into the fretboard and it was pinned to the neck...

Next it was time to release the back from the banded torture form and sand the back down close to the sides...

One of the amazing things to me throughout this whole adventure was how many steps have you cutting, sanding, carving, and rasping next to finish surfaces that you don't dare encroach upon. Steve and Ryan do it with ease and no apparent concern (although you know they are always aware) for the proximity of guitar-threatening tools next to delicate wood surfaces. Me on the other hand was generally always terrified in these situations--but one does get better about it as time progresses...

So here's the rim and back at this point after Ryan's skillful sanding on the interior--he does an amazing amount of work behind the scenes to make everything go smoothly...

I was blown away by how cool this puppy looked at this point!

Then it was time to carve the top under Ryan's watchful eye. Another tense process that is so critical to the performance of the guitar--time will tell how well it performs...

More carving...

Pretending I know what I'm doing by checking out the tap tone of the top after partially carving the braces...

Next up, a process that's familiar to all AGF Custom Shop followers--the Watusi! The process whereby the top is sanded completely around the top to produce the desired curvature while doing a rotating dance around the radiused disc covered with sandpaper--a mixture of pleasure and pain!

After repeating the top brace marking and routing out the top linings for said braces, it was time to close the box and call it a day...

Thanks for following along!

I had the same dream and finally just decided to go for it. You should just make a commitment to yourself to do it and build a guitar with Steve and Ryan--it's an incredible experience that you won't forget! It's such a blast hanging and building with those guys that having a guitar at the end of it all is really the cherry to top it all off.

You are more than welcome to play it at BIG III--I plan on having it with me!
