Default New Goodies to Come from Jim (NS Content)

Hey, gang...

My maple-quest has gotten into full overdrive lately. I got the 655ce and will eventually do a modify-a-model on a 614ce, but Jim is now in the process of getting me an NS64c. The "e" is left off because I'm forgoing the Fishman electronics and putting a K&K Pure Classic on instead. My NS34ce will be leaving in the process, buy I'll be much happier (especially live) with the NS64. Pics to come when she arrives.

First, congratulations! I'm considering getting a NS soon. The one your giving up may be just right for me. I guess Jim at Rodeo will be selling it?

I don't want to spend a great deal of money yet on a nylon stringed guitar, my only purpose for it would be classical. I'm going to start taking classical guitar lessons soon and am not sure if it will be something I want to pursue in the long term. The idea of it (classical) sounds great, but I'm not sure if I will be dedicated to it. It is an area of music that I have not explored since first chair trombone in junior high.

Technically, I haven't sent it to Jim yet. It'll come at the end of our deal, if you're interested in it. If your main interest is Classical, though, it doesn't really sound like a Classical guitar. It's more like a Taylor interpretation of a nylon string guitar. Very balanced and easy to play, though.

Edit: My NS34ce is from 2005, so it's khaya, not sapele. I don't know if functionally much of a difference, but some say khaya is more mahogany-like and sapele is a little brighter.

Sigh...

I actually played a 612ce that was absolutely fantastic. I just couldn't get into the body style. That, however, looks much more appealing to me without the cutaway. Stunning guitar.

Default Groundhog Thread!!!

She finally arrived home yesterday. Jim got her in last week and shipped her off ASAP. Couple interesting things about the guitar:

1) Even though it's technically an NS64c, the serial number still says "ce."
2) Even though there are no electronics, it came with the ES-T instructions and ES-T DVD (edit: technically the new NS's have the ES-N, but the instructions and DVD are for the ES-T, which I guess are technically the same with different voicing).

Jim tried to order it with a bone nut & saddle, but Taylor wasn't very up-front about whether they could do it, for whatever reason. Either way, they didn't charge for it. I'm about 99.9999% certain the saddle is Tusq, but am 50/50 on the nut. I still have the bone saddle Bob sold me for my NS34ce unused, so I can easily swap them out to try, anyway.

The only comparisons I can really make are to my NS34ce. As most steel-string GA's I've played, you can hear the family resemblance between the two guitars. The characteristics of the different woods really make the difference (khaya/sitka in my '05 NS34ce versus maple/engelmann in the NS64c). The NS34ce has more lows, but they get flubby. That was why I wanted to try the saddle, just never got around to it. The G always sounded a little unbalanced and didn't ring out like the other strings, either.

Just what I can tell so far, the NS64c has more punch and is much clearer on the lows, but the overall tone of the unwound strings is actually very similar on both guitars. Both are warm and clear. The same problem exists acoustically, that being I wish they were a bit louder. That's the design, though. The engelmann top does impart more ringing overtones and the guitar overall seems much more responsive and harmonic, for lack of a better way of putting it.

Now... for a K&K Pure Classic to amplify her...

I am happy you are pleased with your purchase. I love the look of the NS6 series. THat Cocobolo binding looks great in contrast to the maple/engleman.

Thanks! I'm very happy with it so far. Actually, I had Bill Nichols make me a TRC with an Orthodox Cross in anticipation and it looks fantastic. Very pleased with this guitar. No, it's not terribly loud, but the tone is fantastic and suits my needs perfectly.
