For me it's always a combination of the singer and a certain song that just gets under my skin and blows me away. Having said that:
Joni Mitchell--River Linda Ronstadt--Long, Long Time Jewel--Foolish Games The emotion of the song and the passion of the voice just collide in an insanely great way in these songs. As far as a guy that can just rip your heart out with his vocals, I'd have to give that one to David Crosby. Last edited by Michael K; 02-14-2005 at 12:07 PM. |

Gosh, all these replies and nobody has mentioned Janice Joplin?
Lots of great names on the list already. I'd have to add Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) to the list. I saw her do an amazing acapella piece at the Roxy in Atlanta one time, it was just incredible. I really good opera too, especially in the tenor range.

Haven't read the whole thread, but here are a few that come to mind:
Janis Seagull (of manhattan transfer fame) on "Why not" leaves me speechless. The scat solo is beyond awesome! Bono on some of the Joshua tree stuff. I'm sure I'll think of more later! |

Funny I listen to more male artists, but its the females that get to me the most. As mentioned Allison Krause, Sara McLachlan, Nanci Griffith. Etta James singing "At Last". Heard the jazz singer Nancy Wison recently-blew me away. Billie Holliday. For males, Vince Gill("I Still Believe In You"), and being from Motown Smoky Robinson("Tracks of My Tears, Ooh Baby Baby),& Roy Orbison.

Almost forgot, most chilling moment at a concert was when Elvis Costello sang "She" almost entirely acapella(and through much of it without a microphone) at Meadowbrook.

Yeah, I forgot about Art Garfunkle. The first time I ever heard "Old Friends", I had a chill up my spine. Heck, every time I hear "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" I get a chill up my spine. Right up there with Sam Cooke, Lucinda, and Emmylou on my spine-o-meter. I also agree with the assesments of Nancy Griffith. I'll throw in another "Griff".....Patty Griffin.
And, how about Rick Danko?
