Super Glue Cleanup on a prior Martin Guitar Binding Repair job
Found this year old video on YouTube today. It might be of interest to those of you who either have or are considering repairing a Martin binding separation yourself using super glue.

Of course, it would be way, way easier for all if Martin made their guitars properly to begin with!
My third guitar fix is getting redone as I tap....came apart already. Pfft! BluesKing777. |

Brian Kimsey has a nice video demonstrating his binding repair and speaks a bit on using Superglue and associated cleanup. Worth a watch.

Both Bryan's video and this one are pretty much how I was taught to repair loose binding, taping off a razor blade to use as a scraper to level the glue squeeze out and going thru the micro mesh grits.
Only thing I noticed is that seemed like a lot of excess squeeze out to me. If I remember correctly Bryan's video didn't have nearly that much cleanup after the fact because he cleaned up any small excess as he progressed. I was always told most folks use way more super glue than necessary, and that using too much compromises the strength of the glue. Just from the video that looks like a clean well run shop. Nice.

The instructions that come with super glue specifically say you only need a tiny amount. Obviously the person that repaired the guitar in the video didn't read the instructions.

A trap I try not to fall into any more, mostly because I did in the distant past.

The person who "repaired" that guitar has no business being withing five country miles of a guitar in need of repair. I'm embarrassed for anyone who would hand that back to a guitar owner and accept money for the work that was done considering the condition in which it was returned. Pathetic.

For those that have had to re-do a repair, were these repairs done at the factory? Did they stand behind their work?

Full time Martin binding repair specialist! (If you watch the repair video above, you can see what a long and involved process it can be, especially the finish touch up work. I think a lot of techs are getting a bit reluctant to do it. Mine is! Last 2 repairs took 7 months plus....). One million Martin binding repairs to go...... BluesKing777. |

I built all or most of 50 guitars (finish work included) and helped out in a couple repair shops owned by friends in Cincinnati for several years. One still builds and was the head repair guy at a multi location music retailer that's now defunct. The other is authorized by Martin, Taylor and Fender Custom shop.
I still don't consider myself qualified to hang out a shingle that says I'm a guitar repair tech. I think it should require completion of a program like the one at Red Wing or similar experience. I don't think there's any formalized apprenticeship like for electricians, plumbers and the like, but I could be wrong. To get and keep your skills up requires "reps" like a true apprenticeship would provide. For example if I need to make a nut I buy a bone blank and 1 or two practice plastic blanks because I do it maybe once or twice a year.
