Default As I Lay Sleeping

My last song, "If" will put you asleep, and this one should wake you up (despite the misnamed title)...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9kJQ0qDbtU

I've been doing a number of Peter Lang's tunes - he composed some great stuff in the 70's, then faded from music. He sort of re-emerged a few years back, but IMO never recaptured the genius of hs early years. I first heard Lang on the album "Fahey, Kottke, Lang" which I highly recommend for anyone who likes fingerstyle solo guitar.

Thanks for listening and have a great weekend,

--Bill

No replies - guess I'll scrap this one!

Whoa, Bill, don't you dare scrap that one! I love it! I was on the road when you posted, so I missed it. That is really great. "If" was lovely and did not put me to sleep, but this one really is a foot-tapper.

Excellent job. I don't know Lang's stuff, so I look forward to learning. Was it your getting into Fahey that led you to Lang?

I'll enjoy this one many times... great job!

Hi Bill,

Question: Do you often use the sheet music to refer to while you play in your videos? I think, in the past you mentioned that it helps you when you record. Sometimes I think it can hinder the flow and sound more mechanical than musical if you have the piece memorized. If you know a piece well enough, it should flow more smoothly. Sorry if I sound overly critical, but you technically seem to have the ability to play a lot of moderately difficult pieces, but it seems like you stop and record before it becomes second nature.

Sincerely, Rick

Bill, I enjoyed that. How did you record it? I think I hear some harmonics in the right channel, so I am guessing that you used the pick up and a mic? The harmonics I'm hearing might be sympathetic string vibration above the nut. If so, a strip of velvet woven into the strings will silence them. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't very bothersome, but it was enough at times to make your guitar sound out of tune to me in some places...it's an odd effect.

Hey, thanks guys for listening. This won't go in the scrap bin yet

Yes, I definitely do, often, record too soon. It's my basic impatience! Although, that said, I can get to a point of diminishing returns, whereby another month of practice might make only minimal improvement in a tune.

I've been experimenting with using my pick-up into an AER Compact 60 amp, and recording with my Zoom H4 set in various locations to capture varying amounts of amp. vs. direct guitar sound. I think I can get almost a 12-string sound when I get the balance right. Perhaps listening with better monitors than I have would help, as I gather folks are hearing odd or distorted tones.

Appreciate the feedback,

--Bill

Bill, your guitar sounds great in the "If" video, but not so good in this latest one, perhaps because of the plugged in sound along with perhaps the alternate tuning. I am assuming that you are unplugged in the "If" video, yes?

That's correct Rick.

I'm always experimenting - maybe someday I'll settle on something that works!

Thanks very much for the feedback.
