What Do I Have Here?
Well, I was out and about this morning and drove by a yardsale. A rickety old guitar case caught my eye. I stopped and gave it a look over. It was a much neglected Alvarez nylon stringer with only rusty 2 strings on it (low E and A). The guy had it marked at an Andrew Jackson. I discussed it with him, telling him that it would need new strings and seeing that the bass side of the bridge was pulled away from the top a bit, might need more work than that. I offered a Hamilton and we settled at a Hamilton and a Lincoln. It's a risk, but a small risk.
I picked up a cheap set of strings just to give it a test drive and it sounds pretty good. It has pretty good volume and sustain. I've never played nylon, but might like to begin. So my questions for the enlightened are two-fold: 1) What do I have here? 2) Is it worth spending a few bucks to get it fixed (the bridge reattached and a set-up)?

I like the coding. I think giving up those guys was a great deal for this guitar. Probably worth a few more guys to fix it up.
Does this answer your question? It's the very same guitar! http://www.may-studio-music-lessons....arez-5006.html |

David,
Many thanks for the link. That helps immensely. If the folks on that website are correct, the stamp is a time marker, so looks like this guitar is circa 1971. Being in good condition, I think I made out pretty well. I'll be sending it to get a little TLC from my luthier. I think I'll get a hardhsell case as well. The cardboard-esque thing it was in is pitiful. Thanks again, Glen

I happen to like Alvarez guitars. They are generally very good values. I think you did OK. It it would probably be worth sinking some money into. I did a quick google search and found this on a post:
Here is the Blue Book pricing info: Excellent $235 - 285 Average $165 - 195 **** The 5006 Alvarez BALADA model, as all the other vintage Alvarez classical models, is an all laminate guitar. Top would be spruce, back and sides Rosewood (2pc) with center inlay. Odd thing is I have the same model, same type label, with the SAME SERIAL NUMBER!? These are early 1970 models, approximately between 1970 and 1974. New the MSRP was $179.95. If in excellent condition you MIGHT be able to get that much for it now. **** Good find Jack
