Wow, I am old ... but what a time to be a kid, huh? I think it was pretty cool ... and I had completely forgotten about the Zither!

We actually had one - looks to be the same as the one on page 301 ... and I could really jam out to "Nearer my God to Thee" on that thing!

Thanks, Tico! Great post!

When was the last Wishbook? I’m 48, and I remember circling things in the catalog for Christmas up until maybe 1983.

We also had JC Penney and Service Merchandise catalogs in the Chicago area. It seems like Harmony was the brand in those catalogs - if I remember correctly. I had an absolutely awful plywood Harmony acoustic from one of those places.

This thread reminds me of my first guitar, a 1966 Hagstrom electric, bought at Montgomery Ward. A kind of strat knock off, with a tremolow bar. Lots better than the Silvertone electrics the other kids in our little band had. Had low action and a nice thin neck. Shiny black with a kind of leather back. I did envy their Silvertone two piece twin 12 amps.

Does anyone remember the big Sears Catalog male underwear scandal? This was THE original wardrobe malfunction. No one knows if its true or not, but I remember it creating big gossip in 1975!

I'm surprised there weren't more electric in the wish book. What happened to the Danelectro models. I got my first electric there around 65 or 66 maybe. The 2 pickup amp-in- case model.

Speaking from experience, the 1960s was a terrible era (an era of torture) for entry-level guitars.
My first wasn't from Sears, but from S&H Green Stamps.
My uncle gave me an Airline guitar that I proceeded to try and 'fix' (e.g., make it unplayable), and it was typical of 60s era guitars - you had to REALLY want to play.

My guess is that the Eastwood version of it would play / sound better and be even cheaper adjusted for inflation.

Entry level guitars have improved to the point where if you spend more than $300, you'll get a decent guitar. Over $500, it's hard to buy a bad one. At $1000, it becomes hard to justify spending more.

Sears made its fortune delivering anything and everything you wanted right to your door and was driven into bankruptcy by a company that delivers anything and everything you want right to your door.

Sears would get it to your door within 4-6 weeks.

Amazon will get it to your door within 48 hours. With free shipping.
