Sorry to bump an old thread, but a question about the first official J-45 reissue, from the early 90s. What was this called to distinguish it from the rest of the line at the time? Did it have a different model name, such as "reissue," or would someone just have to recognize it by having the "Banner" on the headstock?

Thanks Very Much,
Scott Memmer

Check it out. I consigned it with Jon for a very low price

If it doesn't have to be a Gibson and you can find one used try a Kevin Kopp K-35. Used they are just over $3k.

A couple questions:
1) Is there anything in a cheaper price bracket that can compare tonally? 4500 used is a bit too steep to me at this time.
2) Is there anything that doesn't have a large c neck that has the same tone?

Thanks!
The J-45 Legend is essentially Gibson's attempt to create a J-45 in the spirit of Martin's Authentic line. It's a replica of the 1942 J-45 banner with all hide glue construction, short scale round shoulder with Adirondack Spruce top, Mahagony back and sides, 40's style Gibson scalloped bracing and vintage tuners. I'm missing a few details but that's the core of what it is.

There are a few boutique options but they are will cost you. On a budget I'd recommend a used J-45 True Vintage which gets your the Adirondack Top and vintage style scalloped bracing. It's similar to the J-45 Legend but lacking the baseball bat neck and a few other fine details.

If your budget is less than $1500 have a look at the Eastmen E20SS.

Steve, thanks, buddy. That's out of my price range by a good stretch. Looks nice.

I am now looking at possibly the Buddy Holly reissure from the mid nineties, running in the mid $2000, more where my bankroll is right now.

thanks,
scott

RMZ, thanks. I already own and deeply love an Eastman E-10SS. It's a stunningly good guitar. But I do want to own the genuine article someday.

Does anyone happen to know... Apparently the first official Gibson reissue of the J-45 was in the early nineties. Does anyone happen to know exactly what years those were, and how many were made? Also, they made a Buddy Holly model, 500 units, in about 1996. But is the first reissue different and earlier?

Thanks,
Scott

Just wanted to bump this up, to see if anyone can answer the following question(s):

Where does the Gibson "Buddy Holly" Banner J-45 fit in with the rest of the reissues? I'm looking for one with the old "baseball bat" neck, hide glue, etc., as close as possible to the genuine article.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

scott

I also see a 75th Anniversary model that looks similar, what's the difference with that. And only the "Legend" specifies Honduran Mahogany - does that mean the others are some kind of African Hog?

Not to get snarky, but this is my understanding as well. For one, I'm pretty sure all the legends used hide glue.

Perhaps John Thomas will come here at some point and set us all straight.

I found a banner 1943 J45 for $4200USD with a few professionally fixed cracks on the top and a repainted and refinished top (someond has scraped the original finish off to make it look like a j50). And new tuners.

That was this year I made this purchase. Found it on the local craigslist (kijiji up in Canada)

Keep looking on the used market. An actual banner Gibson isn't as unobtainable as you think, you just might lose out on a couple of the 'collectability' traits to get down go a manageable price.
