Johnny Winter was the first concert I ever attended back around ‘72, iirc. The James Cotton Blues Band opened. I was with friends and quite close to the stage. It has always stuck in my mind as a great show.

My first concert as well. Hofienz Pavilion, University of Houston.
What a life he lived, great talent--his stories were very interesting.
In his later interviews, his southeast Texas accent always caught my ear since my wifes' family is from there.

I saw him twice in the 70s. The first time was in the Felt Forum which only held a few thousand people. I figured, a nice intimate setting, I was looking forward to sitting down and watching some great guitar playing.

I had no idea what the energy was going to be like for a JW concert. Well from the first song, everyone was standing going crazy and never sat down the whole show! I couldn't see much, but still a great show.

The 2nd time I saw him was in Madison Sq. Garden. He did two encores that night: Johnny Be Good and Jumpin Jack Flash. When he did Jumpin Jack Flash, everyone was jumping up and down! You could feel the floor shaking under your feet.

By the way, what is that headless guitar he's playing in the first video?

A force to be reckoned with. I saw him later in a small club in Charlottesville, fronting a trio. Great show.

In addition to seeing JW in the early ‘70s as my first concert as I mentioned above, I saw him again at a small venue just a couple of years before the end of his life. He had to be helped out onto the stage and sat on a chair the entire time. I wasn’t expecting much, but as soon as he started to play, the old JW was laying it down. Given his health, it wasn’t a long show. I waited for a time outside the venue with the couple of friends I was with and at one point he exited the building through a side door with his entourage and got into a vehicle. We were within about 20’ of him., said nothing, just observed. He sure seemed frail.
