Tacoma (Pre-Fender) Lacquer DeLam solutions?
Hi - new guy to the forum here (so if you already know where I can find this info please point me in the right direction)
I have a mid-90's rosewood & spruce Tacoma that I am having major lacquer de-lamination problems with. I was lucky enough to years ago have Kevin Gallagher of Omaga Guitars doing lutherie repair work a local shop in Penna. He did a re-finish on the headstock of the guitar for me about 8 years ago. I was saddened to hear of his demise from pancreatic cancer when I sought out his contact info for further advice oin the guitar. I've been told that my only real solution is to totally strip and re-finish the guitar, which I believe to be more clostly than the value of the guitar. It was also suggested that I sand down the affected areas and apply several coats of tung oil which is used on gun stocks. I have serious reservations as to how this will affect the sound of the guitar. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. PEACE -Keith |

I had a couple of mid-90's Tacoma's in the store with the delaminating finish so I did a bit of homework on the problem and the only solution is to have the guitars professionally refinished.

The now infamous "Tacoma Rash"...
Ted's advice is the only fix. Sadly, I don't think it will affect the value as Tacomas are not that valuable because of this issue. If anything, re-finishing it will probably raise the value (but not enough to pay for the re-finish). FWIW, the guitar will probably sound better re-finished as Tacoma finishes were very thick (as you can see based on the thickness of the peeling finish). Jimmy
